The Independence Day weekend set new records for traffic deaths, with totals surpassing 500. The AP tally shows 362 traffic fatalities, 33 boating, 80 drownings, and 99 miscellaneous for a non holiday 102 hour period totaling 574 deaths.
General of the Army Douglas MacArthur told Philippine Congress that scientific weaponry has destroyed war as a sensible means to settle differences. He warned that global war now brings only mutual destruction and cited Red China’s rising power as a threat to freedom. He spoke after a 15 year return to the Philippines and lunch with 2,500 WWII comrades.
The forecast calls for generally fair hot and humid weather through Thursday with highs in the mid 90s and lows near 70. Cooler air is expected Thursday as a front moves across Kansas bringing scattered thundershowers, with Tuesday’s high ranging from 89 at Pittsburg to 97 at Russell and nightly temps around 76 in several towns.
Ellis Potter, 02 N Highland, winner of The Tribune news tip contest, reported a fatal accident in which Richard Fehr of Iola died while helping cut away part of a home’s center section at 710 N Forest. Ted C. Edens president and general manager of Karbe's Inc. died in an automobile accident in Baxter Springs. His young daughter, 3 or 4, was in the car as it rolled backward from the Edens home. Edens was pinned between two vehicles and suffered a skull fracture.
Five year old Cynthia Link of Chase was fatally burned after her dress caught fire from matches found in a car while her mother Melvin Link shopped in Chase. The child managed to escape briefly for help but died Monday night at St Elizabeth's Hospital in Hutchinson.
Donald Perry science teacher at Erie School for three years has been named superintendent of Peru schools in Kansas. Perry takes the post following the resignation of the prior superintendent. Local board announced the appointment today.
Robert Hurford of 312 S Wilson, a Mid-America refinery lab employee, won $1000 in merchandise coupons at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Fourth of July event at City Park. Twelve additional winners received $100, $50, or $25 coupons, with standings listed. The celebration featured three free shows and a fireworks display as attendance declined versus last year.
Ten people died in Kansas during the Fourth of July holiday period. The latest death came Tuesday when a combine driven by James Case, 40, of Colby, overturned into a creek near Agra in Phillips County, crushing him. Three deaths occurred Monday. Missouri recorded 14 holiday traffic deaths.
In Topeka a hospital staged a charity firework display for 7 year old Billy Meier, critically burned June 27. Two police and a fire department detachment watched as Roman candles and fountains lit his window view, after which Billy spoke, saying thank you, doctor.
Seven drownings were counted in Kansas over the long Fourth of July holiday with five on Sunday and two on Tuesday. Victims include Delmar Spiker, 14, of Hoyt who waded into a farm pond, and B. J. Diese, 9, of Kansas City Kansas who drowned after falling from a floating dock at Lake Shawnee near Topeka.
Robert St. Clair, 35, of Iola one of two prisoners who escaped the Erie county jail June 19 is in custody at Garden City and being returned. Sheriff Sloan traveled there to bring him back. St. Clair and Cary Bockover, 17, of Chanute escaped via the dumbwaiter. Bockover was later returned to Amarillo, Texas. St. Clair faces a bad check charge while Bockover is charged with burglary and larceny.
Overland Park Kansas AP reports a 12 year old boy Glenn Bridgman suffered burns to both hands and his face when a Roman candle held by another boy exploded as he stepped from a store. The blast closed his right eye and left him injured.
A replica of Norman oil well No. 1, drilled in 1892 and once the first west of the Mississippi, is being built in Neodesha Kansas as a Centennial feature. The original produced 12 barrels daily.
Government expected to report a June rise in unemployment by at least 500000 driven by a surge of teenagers entering the labor force. An unprecedented number of high school and college graduates sought permanent work, boosting both unemployment and the labor force in June.
Chanute board hears forecast of about three mill increase for 1960-61 as Budgets near completion. Levy would rise from 31.64 to about 34. approximate. Coffeyville suspends seventh and eighth grade athletics next term amid league deemphasis. Chanute opposes, others undecided as league plan proceeds.
Across the Fourth of July holiday period from 6 p m Friday to last night Neosho County troopers reported only two traffic accidents with minor injuries in Thayer district. They logged 18 moving violation arrests and 12 motorist services. Sixteen other counties in the division recorded 19 accidents with two fatalities and about 12 700 dollars in property damage.
Virgil Lynn Collins four years old was struck and killed when he darted from a driveway onto a county road north west of Walnut. The accident occurred around 10 am as a 1959 Dodge pickup driven by Wilbur Wayne Kennedy 17 of Walnut approached. Kennedy said he could not stop in time and attempted to swerve but the child was in the path. The undersheriff Lester Marts investigated and a doctor from Walnut pronounced the boy dead at the scene. The body was taken to Carson Funeral Home at St Paul for funeral arrangements.
Atty. Gen. William Ferguson announced Ed Curry of Topeka as assistant attorney general. Curry, 38, replaces Fred Rausch who resigned to join state workers compensation.

A bandit stopped a tour group on a desert road near Dead Horse Point State Park 28 miles southwest of Moab. He shot two people, killed one woman, and forced a 14 year old girl into a car before fleeing. Authorities set roadblocks across Utah and western Colorado as a manhunt continues.
Three children died when a farm tractor rolled over on a hill near Whiteside Missouri. Tommy Ellis 11 Connie Ellis 13 and Joan Galloway 10 were aboard. The tractor toppled after hitting a log on a hill. Joan was thrown clear and died later at a hospital.
AP reports Kansas Turnpike officials say 92 438 vehicles used the turnpike over the Fourth of July holidays traveling about 6 1 million miles with only three minor accidents. One accident involved injuries and 27 arrests were for speeding from Friday 2 p m to today 8 a m. Last year over the same period 76 270 vehicles used the turnpike with four accidents, one injuring.
Timothy Charles Williams, 18 months old, wandered from his Topeka parents at his grandparents' farm northeast of Burlingame. State troopers, Osage County sheriff's deputies, volunteers and two National Guard helicopters hunted for seven hours before a searcher spotted him in woods about a half mile from the farm.
The pedestrian struck on a lonely road north of Topeka has been identified as John Collier of Topeka Rt. 5. Vernon Robinson of the sheriff’s office noted the death log for 48 hours to 9 am Wednesday and provided July 10 figures and year comparisons for 1961 and 1960.
