Nebraskan Guilty of Reckless Driving
Keith E. Smith of Holdrege Neb pleaded guilty in city court to reckless driving and was fined 25 dollars plus 5 dollars costs. He was driving a sugar laden semi trailer that ran off US 169 south of Chanute at 1230 AM snapping a city power pole. He told officers he had fallen asleep. Damages totaled about 2250 to 2000 for the truck and 250 for the pole transformer and power lines. The truck was en route from Baton Rouge Louisiana to Fairmont Nebraska.

Plane Crash Kills Continental Can Executives in Ohio
A Continental Can Co plane crashed near Marion Ohio killing all 10 aboard after a flight from Chicago to New York. Eight executives and a two man crew died in the smash in a wheat field as searchers combed the debris for remaining victims. The doomed B26 Martin, piloted by John R Dunham of Madison New Jersey, carried passengers from the New York area including Abbot W Sherwood Dobbs Ferry NY J R Wallace Pound Ridge NY and others. The crash occurred near HLF Smith farm six miles east of Marion during a thunderstorm with only fragments recovered.

Fire at Pentagon Area Endangers Equipment and Guards
A large Pentagon fire endangered 30 million dollars of statistical computing gear and sent at least 15 firemen and guards to hospitals. Fire spread through the second floor concourse damaging film stores as crews drilled through concrete to reach the blaze. Officials said many acetate magnetic tapes containing classified data were lost and hundreds of workers were evacuated.

Boy on Bike Is Injured In Collision At Main And Lincoln
Danny Butler fifteen of 408 South Ash was bruised on the right knee when his bicycle collided with a car driven by E G Horine of Iola at Main and Lincoln about 5 40 p m yesterday. He was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital by ambulance then released. Horine said he stopped to let a truck turning in front of him pass. The bicycle struck the bumper of the Horine car. An additional parking lot collision at 902 West Main damaged the right side of a 1959 Chevrolet owned by the Joey Exploration Co. of Chanute. Max Morrison was at the wheel when a parked car owned by Mrs S B Cummings rolled into it.

Chanute fire loss for June was about 500, bringing six month total to 4930 for the year, Fire Chief C W Brennan reported. The department logged 12 runs last month including three for downed electric wires and various other incidents. By July 1 the force had 155 runs, up from 62 by that date in 1958.
