Area sees soaking rainfall boosts parched topsoil

An eastern Kansas area reports 0.26 inch today and 0.4 inch yesterday, with Chanute measuring 0.71 inch. The storm ends a long drought, bringing January totals to 0.77 inch against a 0.91 inch long term average, while 1963 drought and 22 months of dry weather are noted.

Car Recovered After Theft Of 1954 Mercury

Jim Richards an employee of Foodtown market reported his 1954 Mercury missing from the Foodtown parking lot at 6 35 p m. Police found the car abandoned behind a tractor agency at 1517 S Santa Fe at 8 30 p m. They noted it appeared undamaged.

City dog licensing faces short supply of renewals

City records show the 1964 licensing period opened with only 33 dog licenses issued. Since 1962 the animal shelter contract to the Chanute Humane Society governs operations, with 680 licenses in the first year and 446 the next. A 50 cent late fee applies from March 1, and rabies vaccination proof is required for licensing.

Hearings Held For Three Youths In Chanute LaHarpe Cases

Three police court hearings were held yesterday for Chanute youths and a LaHarpe youth. Gary Gurwell of 1201 S Forest was fined 50 for reckless driving and 25 for carrying a concealed weapon after a Saturday arrest. He had steel knuckles found with him and claimed ownership was only to show friends. Larry G Zink of LaHarpe faced reckless driving charges continued until next Thursday after testimony about being pursued from Main to Garfield. James W Prosser of R 1 was summoned on reckless driving after police identified him from reports of three cars involved. John Saving of 419 W Oak sought reconsideration of a 5 fine for blocking traffic. the court upheld the fine after hearing his testimony.

Court Rejects Bell Rehearing in Kansas Rate Case

Southwest Bell Telephone Co loses bid for a new hearing in a multimillion dollar Kansas rate dispute. The Kansas Supreme Court denied the rehearing request, clearing the way for potential refunds of up to about 20 million dollars to state customers. Johnson Urges Bigger Aid Plan For U. S. Farmers

Strobel Named FAA Chief At Kansas City Station

Joseph E. Strobel of Kansas City is named to succeed Burl O Connor as chief of the FAA flight service station in Kansas City. Strobel, a veteran of FAA and its predecessor, will assume duties Monday and has held posts from Honolulu to Saginaw and Kansas City. He is a licensed private pilot, married to Connie Perco, with three daughters, and the family will live at 710 S Evergreen.

Crash Injures Local Businessman Jimmy Joe Laymon

Jimmy Joe Laymon of 417 E Ith was hurt in a fogbound crash two miles south of Iola and taken to Allen County Hospital for treatment. He suffered a head injury and possible internal injuries after his 1958 Cadillac left US 169, struck a culvert, and was totaled. Laymon was reportedly thrown from the car.
