Three Car Thefts For Fun Drive Vandalism Spur Police Call

Car thefts for joy riding and minor accidents kept police busy yesterday. A 16 or 17 year old was seen exiting Mary Rideau's stolen car near Western Drilling Co. The 1959 Chevrolet from C L Fisher lot was driven through a fence and later found with two boys seen leaving near Murray Hill schoolyard. A 1956 Chevrolet theft also reported.

British quell outburst of mutineers in Tanganyika

British commandos quashed a fresh mutiny in Tanganyika with Dar es Salaam reports stating three African soldiers killed and 20 wounded. Kenya uprising also suppressed by British troops. Nyerere feared a broader strike and racial unrest as mutinies spread from Colito Barracks to Caburu.

Drying Pond Snares Bob in Quagmire Rescue

J E Bradshaw of Shaw road southeast of Chanute spotted his 1,400 pound horse Bob stuck in a nearly dry pond. He tried a tractor to pull him free but failed. Wayne Taylor arrived with a winch truck and tractor and pulled Bob from the mud. Bob recovered with no serious harm.

France Plans Atomic Submarines in Nuclear Drive

In Tarbes France Admiral Adolphe Lepotier said France is planning to build five atomic submarines with underwater missile launch devices. Work on a prototype has progressed for several years and the first sub is not expected in service before 1969.

Cliff Watson a 56 year old rural liquor store owner near Topeka shot it out with a robber Bernie O Jones 25 of Marlin Texas stationed at Forbes AFB Friday night Jones was killed and Watson wounded in the abdomen Watson’s wife heard the confrontation and Watson recovered. coroner ruled self defense and a jury convened at Forbes AFB Forbes Air Force Hospital status listed as serious for Watson the incident occurred on U S 75 about 10 miles south of Topeka

JayCees to Honor Young Area Men

General warm and fair weather expected through Sunday with a rise in temperatures. Topeka reports a warming trend starting Sunday for western Kansas, eastern areas remain cooler today. Highs range from the 30s northeast to 50 southwest, with tonight lows in the 20s. Arctic air kept Friday highs around 31 in Topeka and 42 in Garden City. Morning lows varied from 11 at Russell to 25 at Pittsburg. Western Kansas dust from strong northwest winds due to dry topsoil. Light snow fell in northeast Kansas Friday morning, with only extreme northeast points receiving measurable amounts.
