A box marked handle with love with Penny arrived for Mr. and Mrs. E. J. McCandless of 16 Lincoln. The 32 year old German wire haired terrier, owned by Sgt. and Mrs. Norman E Wright, had been in Germany three years and sailed from Frankfurt to Kansas City then Chanute. Penny wore a red collar with ID and notes to guide her to Chanute if lost. The Wrights, stationed at Frankfurt, planned to fly to New York and drive to Ft. Bliss Texas this week.

Accident Is Fatal To Two Persons
Two people died and a third was seriously injured in a one car crash near Belvue on Highway 24 late last night. Dallas W. Junek, 24, Cuba, Kansas, died when the car struck a slick spot, went through a railing, and plunged into a ravine. Charlotte Comeau, 20, Concordia, Kansas, died at a Wamego hospital this morning. Her husband Donald Comeau was hospitalized in serious condition. Belvue lies 28 miles east of Manhattan.

Grandmother saves two children then perishes in Jersey fire
In Plainfield New Jersey a 50 year old grandmother Mrs Oscar Augustine of Berwick Pennsylvania saved her two grandchildren by tossing them to policemen before dying in a blazing tenement. A fire at Freddie Markham farm one mile west and a half mile north of Petrolia destroyed a dairy barn and milking equipment. Firemen arrived after the 4:21 a.m. alarm, and three calves used for a 4-H project were lost. Loss amount was not estimated though partly insured. Investigators suspected an electrical wiring short.
