A Chanute motorist reported his windshield was struck by a rock dropped from a subway, with the rock leaving a three inch impact mark near the driver. The same night a porch at Ernest Crawford’s 802 S Highland home was shelled and a storm door glass at 909 S Grant was broken by an egg.
London AP reports Prime Minister Anthony Eden resigns after 21 months in office. Queen Elizabeth II accepts the resignation after a 70 minute meeting at No 10 Downing Street. Eden, visibly moved, traveled to Buckingham Palace to announce his departure. Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd appears among ministers with a subdued demeanor amid uncertainty over a successor.
House Speaker Rayburn said Democrats are considering a substitute that avoids foreign aid and troop commitments. It asserts a UN interest in Middle East independence and integrity and reserves U S action to preserve that status if necessary. A prominent American sent the proposal to Rayburn, who will forward it to the Foreign Affairs Committee.
A weather advisory warns freezing drizzle changing to snow as temperatures plummet across Kansas. Topeka reports two inches of snow with 20 mph winds, while forecasts call for much colder highs in the 10s and 20s and widespread hazardous driving conditions.
Ash Grove cement plant officials ask Iola about supplying 600 000 gallons of untreated water as Humboldt reservoir may fail to meet ongoing needs. Kenneth W Wright reports a new water source is being sought while the current haul from Humboldt continues with trucks unloading into the plant reservoir. The plant consumes about 600 000 gallons daily and hopes to resume operations within a week once adequate water is secured.
Three Chanute youths were caught Monday hauling a harrow owned by Ralph Dent to sell for junk. They also had a cultivator and a tractor wheel. Dent recovered the items after chasing them, and he does not plan to press charges. Police Chief Tom Morehead stated the trio were forced to re distribute the load by police order.
The Pamona Community will meet Friday night at 8 o'clock in the Pamona School. Cookies and coffee will be served.
Big Hill Improvement Assn directors meet in Cherryvale urging rapid construction of all water installations in the region. President Charles McGinniss cites need for dams in planning or construction, commending Rep. Myron George and calling for congressional action. Attendees include leaders from Cherryvale Parsons Altamont Chanute and Coffeyville.
Kansas State Accident Records notes 2 fatalities in the last 24 hours and 16 to date in 1957, compared with 19 in the same period in 1956.
Neosho Memorial Hospital's X ray charges increase effective January 1 to cover rising supply costs, about a 100 percent hike. The board announced an auxiliary 60 KW generator under a Civil Defense plan to provide backup power for emergencies, and Sterner & McDowell was approved for the annual hospital audit. Trustees Harold Williams Walter Poor Earl Miller and R D Hamar attended the meeting at the hospital.
Kansas legislators heard details of a Docking budget plan likely to raise 25 million dollars for 18 months starting July 1. It would keep 12.5 million in sales tax residue from local governments, possibly increasing statewide property taxes about 3 mills, and add new taxes and bank interest on inactive funds.
An active campaign circulates petitions to appoint Ebur Schultz of Chanute as state highway commissioner for the fourth division under Gov. Docking. Schultz, a real estate and insurance man, has chaired Neosho County party efforts and led the Docking campaign in 1954 and 1956. the position pays $3,000 yearly.
Robert H. Krieger appointed Neosho County chairman for the 1957 Red Cross fund campaign by Erie county chair Charles F. Forsyth. Krieger, new zone manager for Investors Diversified Services, moved to Chanute last June after four years as Burlington school superintendent. He is a Parsons alumnus, Pittsburg State College graduate with a Colorado State College master's, married with a 9 month old son, and active in Kiwanis Chamber of Commerce and Presbyterian Church. The drive starts March 1 with a $10 112 county quota. $6 337 for chapter needs and $3 775 for national and international needs.
A Salina man, Clifford C. Anderson, was killed when a dead tree fell while he directed traffic at a tree removal site. Witness Guy Linville said he did not see Anderson in the tree’s path as the trunk toppled.
City water usage measured yesterday at 1,220,000 gallons, up slightly from 1,209,000 a week prior. The year-ago figure for yesterday was 1,328,000 gallons. For the last seven days total use was 8,434,000 gallons, slightly below the previous seven days total of 8,470,000.
A Kansas research report to the Legislature says voters have had limited choice in choosing judges for many supreme and district seats. It notes few primary contests, high incumbent nonopp participation, and considers governor appointment from attorney layman nominee lists with a constitutional amendment needed to implement.
A 1948 Dodge driven by Larry Ingraham struck a Black Angus calf on US 59 one mile north of here. Ingraham and three Chanute passengers were uninjured. the calf and vehicle suffered damage, with the animal walking away unhurt. The car is owned by J. H. Ingraham. the owners were William E. George and Eric R. Sheriff Lee Montgomery reported the incident happened about 9:15 p.m.

A two car collision on U S 54 near El Dorado killed two people. The dead are Elvin N. Johnson 22 Admire Kansas and Mrs Olive Copeland 65 Waukee Iowa. Johnson rode alone in his car while Copeland rode with three other Waukee passengers who were injured.
Abdel Kader Hatem of Egypt said Cairo will not negotiate with Britain and France on canal control outside the United Nations. He indicated the issue could be brought to the General Assembly with support from Asia Africa and the Soviet bloc. Israel sought UN assurances of free navigation through the canal and Gulf of Aqaba and a Sinai security guarantee before further troop withdrawals.
Americans spent a record 44.44 billion dollars on construction in 1956, the Commerce and Labor departments report. Private construction rose, public building hit 12.4 billion, industrial spending passed 3 billion, while home building fell about 10 percent to 13.5 billion. Projections foresee a 46.2 billion dollar peak in 1957.
Gov elect George Docking will appoint Lt Harvey Schmedemann as superintendent of the State Highway Patrol effective January 14. Schmedemann from Hays is second in command of the 3rd Division with 18 northwest counties and will succeed Col Tom Glasscock who returns to captain.
