Dr. S. B. Thompson and 21 McMurry College students toured the Taylor County jail in Abilene Texas and asked to be locked in a cell. Sheriff George Maxwell joined them behind the cell door and had it locked. Twenty minutes passed before jailers could open the stubborn door.

Charles E. Fischer 35 of Burlington died after a 1965 Chevrolet left US 75 south of the US 54 US 75 junction, hit a steel marker, drove into a ditch and a Hilltop driveway, and struck a tree. Harold W. Rohr 68 was injured. both were from Burlington. Fischer died on arrival at Neosho Memorial Hospital Chanute. The car was totaled with $700 damage. Road Work To Be Bid In Woodson And Neosho Counties
Bids for surfacing on US 4 in Woodson County and on K 57 in Neosho County are to be received at Pittsburg on January 21 by the State Highway Commission. The US 54 project near Yates Center includes widening to four lanes over 1.2 miles and surfacing of the city route and nine rural miles east and northeast of town. Temporary surfacing east of Yates Center was completed in December to allow winter traffic, with permanent surfacing planned. The K 57 project at St Paul calls for asphaltic concrete surfacing from First Street west 0.9 mile and widening the route to four lanes.
