A London bookseller quoted a customer letter claiming a book on mastery over women is being returned because the customer’s wife would not allow him to keep it. Paris reports Nixon inauguration days away dimming hopes for Vietnam talks, with deadlock over conference procedures blocking start.
San Francisco State College reopened from holiday recess as the teachers union local joined students in a strike. The AFL CIO AFT campus local demanded union recognition a voice in administration higher wages and removal of campus police as Governor Reagan vowed to use force if needed to protect operations.
Part of the Santa Fe Railway El Capitan with 580 passengers aboard derailed near Holcomb Kansas 5:15 a.m. CST no serious injuries reported. Twelve double decker cars went off the rails while six other cars and engines stayed on the tracks.
Neosho County commissioners approve redistricting to equalize population. The new map places Thayer Erie Stark St. Paul Galesburg and South Mound in the first district with three-fourths of highway mileage, while Chanute areas shift between first second and third districts.

President elect Nixon names Henry Cabot Lodge as chief Paris negotiator for Vietnam peace talks. Lodge, 66 and former Saigon ambassador, leads a nearly new team that raises questions about Nixon's stance. In Bonn he noted negotiators seek peace and recognize the sacrifices involved.
Greg Bilyeu, 13, son of Gene and Mrs. Bilyeu, returned to Royster Junior High School for the first time since a November 10 auto crash west of Garden City. He is still on crutches and will attend part time due to stair difficulties. he fractured his pelvic bone and convalesces at home.
