In Las Vegas AP report a slender ex-convict says four members of a Kansas farm family were killed last November because he and a fellow robber did not want any witnesses. He details the killings and implicates accomplices in the crime.
Neosho County reported two traffic accidents during the 78 hour New Year holiday period ending at midnight, both Saturday. No injuries occurred. One crash near Kimball involved a parked 1959 Chevrolet and a 1941 Chevrolet driven by C W Gaucher. Gaucher was fined for no driver’s license. The other crash in Chanute on Central damaged a 1955 Plymouth driven by Norma Crabtree and a 38 year old woman.
Tracy Arlene Solomon was born at Neosho Memorial Hospital at 6 15 p.m. January 1 to Mr and Mrs Charles W Solomon 205 S Denman Chanute. The newborn weighed 8 pounds 10 ounces and measured 22½ inches, making her the leading contender in the Chanute trade territory Stork Derby as the contest closes at noon tomorrow.
J A O Leary Kansas bank commissioner urged a formal statement of the condition of all state banks as of the close of business December 31. The request underscores the need for a full report on bank assets liabilities and capital adequacy for the year end.
In 12 degree weather Greg Schultz of Chanute camped on the Erie courthouse steps for the No 1 Neosho County car tag. H L Dryden of Thayer claimed the top truck tag after a 17 hour vigil. Frischenmeyer family led in the race for low numbers as others waited since 1 a.m. with the line growing to open at 8 a.m. Schultz battled a dead battery after his long vigil and travel from Chanute for years.
Frank N. Vaughn, Chanute businessman and World War I veteran, announces run as Republican candidate for Neosho County second district commissioner subject to primary. He highlights 30 years in business and eight years as tax assessor, and lists community roles including American Legion, VFW, Elks, and Masonic Lodges. He and wife reside at 20 N Lafayette.
A house at 1310 Henry Avenue in Chanute owned by L. L. Rowan and occupied by the L. A. Reed family suffered extensive damage from a fire, starting from electrical wiring. The living room and a bedroom were burned out, destroying beds, clothing and furniture for seven residents. Fire Chief C. W. Brennan said the home became unfit for occupancy. no insurance on contents reported. Alarm rang at 8:37 a.m. and crews responded promptly.
A five year old boy was accidentally shot in the hand by his three year old brother at about 1 20 p m while playing with a loaded .22 caliber rifle. The children David five and Carl three are sons of Mrs David Hanna of 1021 N Santa Fe. They awaited their mother in the Chanute Building and Loan parking area when Carl picked up the rifle and pulled the trigger. David was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Washington AP reports the steel industry and workers reached a new labor contract after a 22 hour session with mediation by Vice President Nixon and Labor Secretary Mitchell. The agreement includes a 39 cent hourly increase and must be ratified by both sides amid hopes it averts a strike and eases inflation worries.
Gov George Docking led closed meetings with Democratic lawmakers and state officials to discuss the 1961 budget. He plans to present ideas and gauge reaction while lawmakers propose additions. House members and two Democratic senators attended with other state officials. The Ways and Means committees began reviewing about 50 agency budgets ahead of Docking’s Jan 12 13 money proposals.
Thomas Bergtald, 28, was named administrator of Neosho Memorial Hospital replacing Elsie Ellis who led the facility for seven years. He comes from St. Luke's Kansas City after an 18 month residency and work on special projects. Bergtald and wife Darriel reside at 1005 S Highland. He aims to run the hospital effectively with no policy changes anticipated.
Ralph O. Brownfield, 52, announces candidacy for the Republican nomination in Kansas third district. He is the second Republican to enter, joining state senator Walter L. McVey. the seat is held by Democrat Denver D. Hargis. Brownfield, a former Air Force brigadier general with 12 medals, spent WWII in the Pacific and retired in 1957 after 30 years of service.
Dwight McCreight starts work as editor and publisher of The Tribune. His wife and daughter will join later after housing is secured. He stays at the Tioga Hotel while replacing E. W. Johnson who plans to move to Olathe to publish a daily newspaper. McCreight comes from Hutchinson where he was a director of The Hutchinson News and classified advertising manager.

In Kansas City a United Steelworkers leader welcomed the steel strike settlement as a potential two year truce. Morrisville workers echoed relief with about 95 percent optimistic. Bids on the first stage of the John Redmond Dam project on the Neosho River near Burlington Kansas will be opened January 11. The $1.5 million embankment program includes 2,900,000 cubic yards of excavation and 1,890,000 cubic yards of earth fill.
A Kansas forecast notes partly cloudy skies and colder conditions with highs in the 20s Tuesday. A minor storm system brought light snow to western Kansas and is expected to linger through Tuesday, with freezing rain or snow possible eastward and temperatures remaining below freezing across the state.
