Chanute records show 1963 driest year on rainfall

The Chanute area logged 20.6 percent moisture in 1963, the driest year since rainfall records began 33 years ago at Martin Johnson Airport. Historically low totals include 1956 at 22.08 inches and 1952 at 22.83 inches, while 1961 saw a high of 61.13 inches and 1951 a flood year with 56.02 inches. February was driest (.09) and July was wettest (3.66).

Gunshot Wound Suffered Accidental Injury at Home

Jerry Lester a 15 year old Erie resident was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital for an accidental gunshot wound to the lip teeth and tongue from a .22 rifle. Police say the rifle fired while Lester and his 12 year old half brother Gary Freeman, who had been rabbit hunting earlier, were handling it. Arthur L. Lester his father transported him to the hospital.

Quiet New Year's Holiday in Area Reported by Police
