In Spencer Massachusetts two robin egg blue 1949 cars with dented doors caused a mistaken theft report. A garage picked up the wrong car, police treated the first as stolen, then a visit to a mechanic revealed the mix up. The first owner escapes repair charges while the second owner plans another attempt.
A farm near town sees 18-year-old Joe Dale Waggoner riding a black mare she suddenly falls after stepping in a hole in an alfalfa field. The mare dies instantly from a broken neck. Joe Dale is bruised and shaken, while the horse had been a prized gift from his grandfather Fred Bower who declined offers for the animal.
A derailment of a Santa Fe freight near Medill Missouri halted southbound service. About 27 cars derailed blocking both tracks, delaying the Streamliner and Oil Flyer by several hours while routes were adjusted for Kansas City connections. No injuries reported. resumption depends on track clearance and cause undetermined per AP.
Three young men bound over to Neosho County District Court on grand larceny charges for stealing a motorcycle from Irvin Lassman at Chanute. Bill Wing 22, Donald Wing 19, brothers from Humboldt, and James Perry of El Dorado face $500 bonds each. Motorcycle and most parts were recovered. defendants to be taken to Erie to await trial or bond posting.
Pvt. Albert Lee Kesterson age 20 of Springfield Missouri was killed by military guards during an escape attempt while en route from Fort Leonard Wood to Fort Riley for desertion trial. He broke loose as trains were being changed at Pacific Missouri and ignored commands to halt.
Berkeley AP reports that space travelers could age slower than Earth residents due to cosmic rays but may suffer gray hair from radiation. To aid comfort and orientation, interplanetary ships might need to be rotated to create slight artificial gravity for passengers and crew.
A 10 member Turkish farm delegation will visit Chanute tomorrow as guests of the Mid-American Refining Co. They arrive around 9:30 or 10 AM and tour local oil leases near town, inspect the Keas Drilling Co. operations, and tour the Mid American refinery. Lunch will be at the Tioga Hotel. The visit aims to show how local industry supports agricultural communities.

Earl E. Shultz, 22, of 524 W. Pine, was sentenced to nine months in county jail after pleading guilty in police court to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and three additional counts. Judge Robert Pennington imposed 120 days for DUI, 60 days for leaving the scene of an accident, 30 days for driving with a suspended license, and 60 days for parole violation. He was taken into custody after a pursuit east of the city following a bar collision with a car driven by John R. Crownover of Chanute.
Purchase of the Carl Hutchison general store in Chanute area announced by Mr and Mrs Hobart Koch of Fredonia. Bob Kidd will manage the store which will keep a stock of general merchandise along with feed salt wire and other farm needs. Hutchison plans for the future unclear. He has long operated the Rest store and raised buffaloes once famous as eastern Kansas herd owner. Buffalo herd kept in pasture north of K39 between Chanute and US 75.
The State Board of Health records the year's first polio case in Kansas. An 11 year old Humboldt boy is the patient.
Topeka reports three traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours raising the year total to date. The State Accident Records Section notes 82 deaths for the same period in 1955.
President Eisenhower will hold a 10 30 a m news conference in Washington with White House Secretary Hagerty stating there are no plans for a second briefing tomorrow. Hagerty declined to comment on a possible radio televised appearance or an expected prepared opening statement.
Dodge City farmer and GOP leader Josserand says he will seek the South District delegate seat at the March 17 GOP convention. He blasts Gov. Hall’s political activity and backs Eisenhower, arguing the race centers on labor boss influence backing Harry Darby over Hall.
In Cherokee County a Republican meeting pits Robert Hartley against Dist. Judge Jerome Harman over support for Mrs. C Y Semple the Kansas national committeewoman. The clash centers on her claimed Kansas residence while mail goes via Baxter Springs.
A six engine B47 jet exploded and crashed into a Knob Noster farm destroying the four room home. Mrs. Clay Curtis and her son Danny escaped with minor burns while all four crewmen were killed. The crash occurred about Whiteman Air Force Base after the craft exploded 200 feet above the ground. The crew were Capt Robert R. Hayes Capt James P Gianokos Lt James L Peters and Capt Frank J Matuszewski.
Gov. Fred Hall announced the appointment of John O'Brien Sr. of St. Paul as justice of the peace for Mission Township Neosho County to fill a vacancy. The term lasts until the next general election.
Adlai Stevenson said the Eisenhower administration appears rattled and confused in foreign policy. He urged President Eisenhower to convene a Washington meeting of White and Negro leaders to ease racial tensions during a busy New York visit.

The message cites John 5 39 and presents Christ’s life death and resurrection as the core of faith urging repentance and reconciliation with God. Hollywood AP Jack Webb declines a fourth Emmy nomination for best director of a TV film series calling the awards structure fouled and withdraws to alleviate confusion. He notes Dragnet has won previously but objects to the current “best action or adventure series” category which mixes Dragnet with Disney's Lineup and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. The academy says Davy Crockett was nominated in that same category despite Disney considering it a family program.
Kansas braces for a warming trend as clear skies return through Wednesday. Forecaster Tom Arnold predicts minimums 25 to 30 degrees tonight and highs in the 50s northeast to 60s southwest tomorrow. Five day outlook calls for 5 to 10 degrees above normal with limited eastern precipitation and little western rainfall.
Edward J. Bower aged 31 of Great Bend died late Sunday from injuries in a wreck on Highway 96 near Heizer.

In Montgomery Alabama Rev L R Bennett a jailed civil rights preacher defended ministers arrested for leading the bus boycott saying no city can afford to criminalize 24 preachers. The mass meeting drew cheering support from church groups nationwide amid the segregation protest.
Neosho and Cottonwood river flood control reservoirs were reviewed by the water resources committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Discussion covered a city reservoir dam on the Neosho north of Chanute and plans for upcoming meetings with officials including Gordon Barker and Wayne M. Taylor.
