Youth Rescued After 12 Story Plunge From East 24th Shaft
James Anderson, 20, was forced at gunpoint by a burglar to jump from a skylight into an air shaft at 121 123 East 24th Street. He fell about 12 stories and became wedged between pipes and the shaft wall. Fire and police emergency squads located him by his pleas and freed him after nearly 12 hours. He suffered probable broken arms and legs and back injuries, and a doctor sedated him during extraction.

Topeka and seven nearby towns experienced near normal gas service after a 16 inch main break 22 miles east caused 24 hours of outages.
