The Kansas House tentatively approved a bill to raise legislators expense allowances retroactive to the current session start. It would lift daily in session from $15 to $25 and monthly between sessions from $50 to $100, plus more mileage trips. Final vote set for Friday.
Members of the House select committee on Adam Clayton Powell meet to finalize a report recommending Powell be seated with a stiff censure, loss of seniority, and repayment of about 35,000 dollars in misused funds. The plan totals discussions and a likely House vote next week.
A Confederate intercept reinterprets a message about highway 1 35 noting a mistaken focus on Ottawa south and a planned Y linkup with Wichita and Tulsa. The governor’s reference to the southern Oklahoma portion is clarified.
Rep George Meeker of Garden City asked the Legislative Council to study relocating the Kansas capitol to central Kansas and report to the 1968 legislature. He argued the move would ease building needs, cost, and renovations in Topeka and boost state economic and industrial development.

A Union Pacific freight train collision at a Russell crossing claimed two lives. 12-year-old Gregory Lloyd died after the crash and his grandmother Mrs. Lawrence Mohl 47 also died earlier. Gregory’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lloyd and Mary Frances Murphy 8 was injured.
Tokyo dispatches say wall posters in Peking claim Chinese army units have turned against Mao supporters in Henan the bread basket province. Reports from Chengchow City say nearly 1000 followers were arrested with similar messages from Inner Mongolia Sinkiang and Tibet. A party lead suggests Liu Shao-chi Teng Hsiao-ping may face self criticism to keep their posts.
A Southern Pacific freight train hit a station wagon at a South Sacramento crossing killing nine family members. The wreck hurled debris up to 200 feet. engineer Calvin C. Searley said he did not see the car before impact. The deceased include Herbert Hill 42 and Annie Laurie Hill 38 and their children Deborah 3 Michael 4 Timothy 6 Edward 7 Caroline 8 Herbert Jr. 10 and Douglas 10. five daughters survived elsewhere.
A Canadian air mass drives north winds 30 to 50 mph across Kansas with tonight’s lows in the teens to zero in the north. Central areas face blowing dust and light snow flurries. Friday clears, turning warmer with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens.
In Wilmington California on a street widening job workers ruptured a chlorine gas line releasing a poisonous cloud. Thirty three men were overcome and five were hospitalized after a tractor ruptured the same line the next day.
American troops launch the largest Vietnam War operation in War Zone C near the Cambodian border led by paratroopers in Operation Junction City. The drive, centered 50 to 75 miles northwest of Saigon, followed B52 raids and involved about 45,090 U.S. fighting men with heavy air and ground activity reported.
New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison hinted that free lance pilot Davis Ferrie held secrets about President Kennedy's death. Ferrie, a psychologist and private detective, was found dead in his bed, with officials noting an apparent self inflicted brain hemorrhage amid notes about a "sweet prospect."
David Lewis, who warned he feared for his life over New Orleans probe details, left town with his family for an undisclosed location after routine comments on the death of David Ferrie. Ferrie, a figure in the Garrison inquiry, was found dead in his apartment. Lewis, 26, a former private detective and bus station baggage clerk, had claimed meeting Lee Harvey Oswald. Bus station employees said they did not know his whereabouts or return date.
Two years after Thomas Henry Killam died with his throat slit beside a shop window authorities probe his death. His brother Earl Killam says the slain man claimed to be harassed by agents and fled Dallas in 1963 amid Kennedy assassination inquiries. His wife Wanda Killam cites federal questioning. The coroner ruled the death accidental.
Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle fired a three gun salute for George Washington's birthday. A spokesman said a breech jam and hung fire prevented completing the planned 21 gun salute, and by the time repairs were done it was too late to continue.
The 1967 high school basketball queen coronation will occur before the game with Pittsburg at the gym. Nominations include Linda Ashley Donni Mitchell and Beverly Willcott with spectators advised to arrive shortly before 8 p.m.
