Westerman Electronics shows its first production piano model in the foreground, completed a week ago as part of its domestic manufacturing plan. The article notes ongoing production plans for the instrument at the local factory.
Westerman Electronics Inc starts production of the Electra-String Piano in Chanute at 720 W. Cherry. Designer Charles Mussulman of Home Appliance Co developed the 160-pound instrument since 1950 with Wes Valliere aiding. The firm plans an open house after mid March as full scale production nears and distribution will target dealers nationwide and abroad. Charles H. Neal Jr described the prototype’s tours to cities nationwide. James H. Carter of Topeka formed the local corporation to manufacture and market the piano after learning of the invention about a year earlier. Carter previously ran bowling alleys and Life Insurance ventures and later founded several investment firms.
The City Commission will hear a policy proposal to form a consolidated gas sewer and water department led by Larry Shepard. It will also consider vacating 16th west of Santa Fe for a new shopping center, presenting a plaque to widow Maxine Johnson, and appointing Bob Bunting as EKPA alternate representative. An application for a beer license by Richard Workman of the Au Bar will be reviewed, and $995.22 in uncollectible utility accounts may be written off.
A reader vents about the clock change and the struggle to adjust to earlier work starts. The note expresses dislike of losing an hour of sleep and preference for more morning light.
City inspector Lea Hardman announces conversion of southeast Chanute homes from low to intermediate pressure gas service once regulators are installed on meters. Ozark Pipeline crews have placed external regulators. five to six homes with meters inside basements require moving outside. Beginning Monday Hardman will contact owners between 15th and 20th Streets to relocate meters.
A federal suit filed by the Kansas Civil Liberties Union and others seeks to block destruction of 532 KBI files on public officials and private citizens. A temporary restraining order was avoided by an agreement that none would be destroyed pending the case.
Most of the United States will move clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday as Daylight Saving Time begins, extending daylight after work for eight months. Arizona Hawaii and part of Indiana do not observe the change. Michigan Idaho and several territories also avoid the shift.
Considerable cloudiness today with scattered showers and a high in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Tonight will be drier with lows in the upper teens to mid 20s. Sunday turns partly cloudy and a bit warmer with highs in the 40s. North to northwest winds 10 to 20 mph and a 30 percent chance of precipitation today.
Pauline Flynn, a Southeast Kansas child welfare consultant, urges development of a regional foster parent organization in Neosho County. She says such a group will educate the community, share experiences, and accelerate training while keeping children near familiar environments and with supportive social workers.
Dr. L. G. Atkinson, Erie’s 87 year old veterinarian, still works full days and takes night calls. He trained in 1911 at Oklahoma Veterinary School and ran a horse hospital in Bartlesville before returning to Neosho County. He co ran Atkinson McCarty Laboratories in the 1920s and later built weather vanes and patented a rubber patch sold for ten thousand dollars. He plans a life story, though he says it may take a couple of days to write.
