Police in New York and Chicago kept wary watch after the assassination of Malcolm X. A 22 year old suspect, Talmadge Hayer of Patterson New Jersey, was charged with homicide as authorities pursued other plotters amid fears of reprisals. The murder followed threats against his life and a firebomb attack on his Queens home a week earlier.
A six foot long stubby winged glider with two thousand heat sensitive dots heads for a suborbital flight Tuesday. The Thor Delta booster will launch between 7 a.m. and noon EST for Project Asset’s sixth test. The craft aims for 39 miles altitude, speeds to 13300 mph, then parachutes into the Atlantic 2750 miles southeast of Cape Kennedy. Recovery is planned.
Acting Laos Foreign Minister Pheng Phongsa van met for an hour with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko in Moscow. No details were released on a likely subject but the USSR and Britain cochair the Geneva machinery overseeing Laos.

Einar Myllyla, a Finnish construction worker in his 30s, was pulled from the Granduc mining camp ruins near the Canadian Alaska border after 79 hours beneath snow and debris. Rescuers face ongoing slides and heavy snowfall as 14 bodies are recovered and 13 are missing. Myllyla, flown to Ketchikan, remains in serious condition with frozen limbs and experts debating surgery.
Members of the Washington National Monument Society and the Joint Services Honor Guard honor George Washington's birthday at the monument. Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant III, grandson of President Grant, chairs the celebration as colors are posted and a wreath laid at the monument base.
Rose M. Sadowsky, 18, of Newton died when her car hit a culvert on a county road southeast of Newton. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Sadowsky. Three-year-old Janet Power, of Topeka, was fatally struck by a car near her home Saturday, with injuries reported for the child.

A 24 year old hunter, Jack Foster of Bonner Springs, Kansas, disappeared during a coon hunting trip near Lyndon in southern Osage County. Searchers combed fields and Frog Creek area about one and a half miles west of US 75 and three miles north of US 50, aided by a Kansas highway patrol plane. Foster is described as in good health and an experienced hunter. five other men and a young boy accompanied him.
The Ambassadors Club a Chamber of Commerce membership group will hold a noon luncheon at the Tioga Hotel on Wednesday. Progress reports will be delivered on the ongoing membership drive.
Moscow reports satellite No. 57 in Cosmos program with an orbit from 105 to 307 miles. Tass says three Cosmos satellites were placed in orbit on Sunday. The Cosmos program begun in 1962 aims at scientific space research.
President Urho Kekkonen of Finland flew into Moscow today marking the final leg of his overseas visit after a trip to India. He is expected to depart for Helsinki soon, continuing Finland's diplomatic outreach.
Pasadena AP reports NASA scientists analyzing Ranger 8 lunar photos suggest the surface may be a foamlike dust and lava layer several feet deep. The five member team cautions explorers should probe ahead with poles as the terrain could be treacherous yet may support soft landers in parts.

Vandals toppled the park miniature train engine for the second time, leaving it badly damaged. The engine, owned by Clarence Collins of Chanute, is run as a children’s ride in Santa Fe Park under a city concession.
Dr. Don R. Abuehl has filed as a candidate for re election to the Chanute school board completing his first four year term. The only other candidate to date is Dr. Dwight Blackwood who seeks the remaining two years of an un expired term he has been filling by appointment.
President Johnson told Lexington graduates that the younger generation faces a tough, defining task to make the world serve human dignity. He warned of great dangers and emphasized global responsibility, saying the under-25s inherit a pivotal era with the power to lift the oppressed or condemn civilization.
William Timmerman resigned today as attorney for the Kansas Turnpike Authority, clearing way for a possible appointment of former Governor John Anderson. Authority chair Robert F. Duncan will review pending lawsuits as a decision nears. Anderson, who left the governorship last month, now serves part time with the State Board of Healing Arts.
A Kansas House bill proposing a county manager form of government would limit elected officials to county commissioners clerks of the district court judges of probate and county courts and the county superintendent of schools. Sponsor Rep Marvin Clark said the plan could increase efficiency reduce staff and encourage younger men to seek election while shifting policy making to the commissioners. Other sponsors include Rep Charles McCall Wayne Angell William Hall and Herbert Rogg.
