Auto salvage operator Jake Almond rescued three cows stuck up to their backs in mud after a heavy rain. The incident followed by notes on county license tag sales and a Juco blood donor drive. Thirty four Junior College students volunteered to donate with others limited by age and weight rules.
Neosho County winners of the Balanced Farming and Family Living awards were presented framed certificates at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Chanute. Recipients were Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Thompson, Earl and Mrs. Vernie Umbarger, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Foster.
Lawrence Kansas records show a blast and fire in a one story home early yesterday killing Glenn Hadl 36 Irene Hadl 22 and their daughter Shirley 22 months. Neighbors heard an explosion about 1 am and firemen found the home fully involved. The baby died at a hospital hours later, while both parents perished after escaping the flames. The cause of the blast is not yet known.
The New York Times reported from Karachi that Turkey and Pakistan have completed secret negotiations with Iran Lebanon and Syria for a large defense alliance. Jordan and Yemen are expected to join the pact designed as a shield against Soviet aggression in the region.

Insurance salesman William L. Henderson of Kansas City told authorities he was bound in his own car for 24 hours by two African American men who robbed him of 30 dollars. They forced him to drive to near Wyandotte County lake then to Leavenworth Atchison and St Joseph Missouri before the car stuck in mud and the suspects fled in another vehicle. Deputy Sheriff Henry Campbell said Henderson freed himself and notified officials.
In PORT CLINTON Ohio two cars on the ice of Lake Erie near Middle Bass Island broke through yesterday leaving two of six men aboard dead. Victims identified as Charles Schneider 47 who ran a boat rental service and John Klacik 27 a Kuemmel Fisheries net tender. The cars departed from Put-in-Bay after a volunteer firemen’s dance, the lead car following a lighted course across the ice. Traffic on the frozen lake is a common winter link between Middle Bass Island and Put-in-Bay about two miles apart.
A sharp single earthquake shock woke scores of sleepers in the west and Southwest sections of Los Angeles early today. No damage was reported, and no injuries were mentioned.
News of the Trans World Airlines crash near Albuquerque, New Mexico, reports Capt. Ivan R. Spong 44 Chanute trained airman among 16 dead. Spong mentored at Chanute High School class of 1929 and later flew for Cessna and TWA, married with a son Mike, survivors include his mother Mrs Hulda Spong of Phoenix and siblings in Chanute and Arizona.
Norton state sanatorium superintendent Dr. C F Taylor reports 1954 saw 26 far advanced tuberculosis cases among public workers at Norton. The group includes eight cooks, six waitresses, four teachers, three grocers, a cafe owner and others. He urges a chest X ray or annual TB test for workers in public occupations. He notes more older people are being affected.

He names Will Rogers Buffalo Bill and famed cowboy poets as potential honorees with Dickinson North Dakota among candidate sites. Trustees meet Bowyer at 8 50 a m Saturday and city assessors at the same time next Monday for final instructions and supplies. Assessing begins March 1.
Milwaukee authorities battled a major early morning blaze in a two story brick Meyer Co. furniture store on the North Side. Fire Chief Edwin Wischer reported it as the worst in 34 years, with two firemen injured and all off duty crews called in as embers threatened adjacent structures amid frigid mid 20s temperatures.
An 87 year old man, Mond F. Cottle, died after a shotgun discharged while he climbed through a barbed fence at the Wadsworth Veterans Hospital. Investigators treat the incident as accidental.
A violent blizzard blasted the western Pacific from Formosa to the Kuriles for the third day leaving more than 285 dead or missing, most of them fishermen.
New Mexico State police report five badly burned bodies recovered at the wreckage site on a snowed Sandia peak after a Trans World Airlines Martin 404 crashed near Albuquerque. Identification is pending and recovery is slow. Pilot I R Spong of Prairie Village Kansas was the captain on the flight from Kirtland Field to Santa Fe and beyond.
The Kansas weather forecast calls for cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday with occasional light rain or freezing rain. Warmer Tuesday, lows in the 20s, highs around 40. Occasional freezing rain may occur in the east by tomorrow morning, changing to rain in the southeast, with snow possible in the northwest by tomorrow night. Highs range from the 30s in the northwest to the 40s in the southeast.
