Sgt. Dean Benander of the Kansas Highway Patrol lectured on safety and distinctive uniform features to Lincoln School students in Emporia. By week’s end the patrol will complete safety courses in all Chanute schools.
Northland Building Corporation president William E. Sillin presented a preliminary application to Chanute Planning and Zoning for a four acre site at 2200 W. 7th to rezone from R-1 to PUD. The plan now shows four buildings with a pool and no clubhouse, citing economic factors and similar height to earlier versions.

The Senate approved delaying Ford’s 3 per barrel oil tariff for 90 days by 66 to 28, with House backing the delay 309 to 114. Ford vows veto, while Senate override chances hinge on wavering votes. Only two Democrats opposed the bill, and ten Republicans supported it.

The 10 day mission to Saigon with about 20 lawmakers may still depart, but many senators and representatives are staying home amid a veto override on the oil tariff suspension. Senator Jake Garn cited the veto vote as key to his withdrawal.
Laboratory technician Robert Woodard resigned from Neosho Memorial Hospital after being given the option of resigning or being fired Administrator Murray Brown said Woodard was arrested for possession of marijuana a misdemeanor on February 7 and pleaded guilty the same day Brown cited several factors in the decision Woodard said he felt unjustly forced to resign and declined further comment
State official figures show 222 people died on state highways in 1974, down from 335 in 1973. Southeast Kansas recorded the largest decline as six divisions reported lower fatal accidents, with night deaths rising slightly from 121 to 125.
Tickets for the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner are on sale at $6. The 6:30 p.m. event on Wednesday, February 26, at the Central Park Building features Gov. Robert F. Bennett, with R. C. Lee giving remarks as incoming chamber president. The Jubilee Singers directed by Mrs. Kenneth Childers provide entertainment.
