Gladden's Attorney Threatened After Bomb Attack

Attorney Martin Anderson representing Stanton M. Gladden and Fire Fighters Local 42 said he received a threatening letter. Gladden, a fire battalion chief, was injured when a bomb exploded under his car at home on February 9. FBI official W. Mark Felt said the letter is being investigated.

Explorer IX Balloon Satellite Spotted Over Earth

A polka dot Explorer IX balloon satellite was rediscovered by the Civilian Space Agency after lifting from Wallops Island. It orbits from 404 to 1604 miles as scientists track it optically and test air density using sighting data. The craft is visible across the United States at times.

Three Youths Die In Missouri Crash West Of Sedalia

In heavy rain on U S 50 three miles west of Sedalia, Missouri, three youths were killed and a fourth injured when their car struck a bridge. Victims were Wayne E. Moore 18 Holden Clinton C. Murphy 19 Whiteman AFB and Margaret Elwell 19 Warrensburg. Ruby Wilson about 19 of Warrensburg suffered a leg fracture and a head laceration. Murphy was the son of M Sgt C F Murphy Whiteman AFB.

Man Held on Felony Check Charge Returned from Ponca City

Lester Brutchin formerly of Chanute remained in Erie county jail on a felony check charge after arrest in Ponca City Oklahoma. Sheriff Jerry Sloan and Police Chief Lige Matlock brought him back from Ponca City last night.

Four Accidents Investigated in Local Traffic Crawl

Police investigated four non injury traffic accidents yesterday. Details include a 1:10 p.m. collision at 1sland Lincoln involving Willie Davis and Kenneth Chestnut with $30 damage to a 1956 Chevrolet. Other incidents involve Ruth Lacey, L. W. County detainer filed on ex-convict William M Cornell

Neosho County authorities said they filed a detainer against 28 year old ex convict William M Cornell currently in Wichita custody. He is wanted on misdemeanor bad check charges here after release from Lansing Jan 24 following a three year term. Cornell is accused of passing at least three bogus checks under $50 in Chanute and similar instruments in Pittsburg Topeka Fort Scott and Joplin. He was arrested in Wichita Thursday.

Excavation Starts for New 48-Bed Nursing Home

Groundwork has begun in the 1600 block of West 2nd for a one story 48 bed nursing home by Mr and Mrs Otis B Autry. The Autrys operate a current nursing home at 719 South Highland and will continue that facility during construction with a target completion by Oct 1.

Muster Day Observed By Chanute Guard Monday Open House

The Chanute National Guard plans an open house during its drill Monday night at the Armory from 7 30 to 10 pm to honor National Muster Day. Lt. John Jensen says 5 000 guardsmen exist in 50 states DC and Puerto Rico with over 470 000 personnel. Chanute’s Company B 174th Military Police Battalion lists 115 enlisted and three officers with six on short active duty and about 20 more slated for June and July.
