Nearly 200 county civic and service club reps lined up to back a multi county centennial pageant. Vernie Helard and Sam Gregg outlined planning, budgets, and a six night performance June 12 to 17 written by the Rogers Producing Co. with a 300 to 1000 cast.
Liberia urged that leaders of all Congo political groups convene with the U.N. Security Council and Dag Hammarskjold to avert civil war. Ambassador Padmore pressed for a peace parley at U.N. headquarters or in the Congo, as behind the scenes diplomacy sought Soviet and U.S. backing. A draft resolution backed by 18 nations urged U.N. force if needed, expulsion of foreign personnel, and an impartial probe into Lumumba's death.
Harold R. Williams announced his candidacy for re election to the city commission in the spring municipal election. The former Ash Grove cement plant chief power engineer retired four years ago after 36 years service and has pushed water system improvements, gas rate adjustments, and a municipal power pool. Other spots include an unexpired commission term and three school board seats with no candidates yet. Filing deadline is March 10 with primary on March 21 and general on April 4.
Harry F. Hurry, 46, died of carbon monoxide poisoning Thursday night after being overcome while working on his car in the garage at his Wichita home. The garage doors were closed and Mrs. Hurry found the body when she checked why he hadn’t come in for dinner.
The Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital seeks two physicians to join the staff after Dr. Robert G. Loudon resigned to join the University of Texas Southwest Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Yong W. Kim has been named acting superintendent as the search continues.
TOPEKA Kansas AP A large quantity of pop-up pills has been found in the possession of John Richard Sallee 39 labeled a Kansas City hoodlum by U S District Attorney Wilbur Leonard. Sallee is charged on three counts of illegal distribution of amphetamine sulphate also known as bennies seized in Kansas City Thursday night. The pills used by truck drivers to stay awake require prescription and the seizure is among the largest in a recent crackdown on illegal sale.
In Maynardville, Kenneth Hatfield told police his revival service noise prompted him to attempt arson at a church near his home. He pleaded guilty to arson on Thursday and received a five year sentence.
Topeka AP reports the 1961 distribution from the state school fund remains at $1.89 per pupil, totaling $1,119,907 versus $1,102,722 last year. Funds derive from permanent school fund investments along with motor carrier, insurance and mineral lease fees.
SIOUX CITY IOWA AP The middle aged daughter of banker W P Iverson Geiger was sentenced to 15 years in prison for embezzling 2 126859 10 from Sheldon National Bank. Judge Henry N Graven ordered five year terms on each of the first three counts to run consecutively and five years on 33 other counts concurrent. Geiger 58 pleaded guilty January 30. The case began with federal bank examiners discovering shortages January 16.
AP notes a 24 hour traffic death log in Topeka with February figures and 1961 to 1952 comparisons. The report cites February totals and contrasts with the 1960 period, showing a higher or lower death count in recent times.
President and Mrs. Kennedy plan to depart Washington around noon Saturday to spend the weekend at their rented estate near Middleburg Virginia.
An official investigation is set into a fatal accident at an Atlas intercontinental missile complex in Roswell New Mexico after a large crane toppled 172 feet into a pit trapping six workers who died. Nineteen were injured and many details remain unclear as survivors recount the catastrophe. The crash occurred while workers were assembling steel framework for the launch area.
In Topeka AP report the Kansas Senate moves to abolish and recreate the Banking Board Water Resources Board Armory Board and Real Estate Commission under Gov Anderson immediate control. The chamber approves a school transportation division in the Public Instruction Department and asks Congress to establish a Kansas water evaporation research center.
TOPEKA AP Thirty one bills were introduced in the Kansas House as lawmakers rushed a final flood of measures before Tuesday deadline. Proposals include tying inactive fund interest to a five year Treasury note average, shifting nursing home licensing to the Board of Health, allowing all counties to use voting machines, delaying legal driving age with training requirements, banning secrecy in government meetings, and licensing vending machines with a five dollar annual fee.
Officials estimate 2000 visitors will tour the new Wilson County courthouse during the March 4 open house. All offices moved to the new location and staff will assist the crowd. The Rotary club will provide coffee and doughnuts as razing of the old courthouse progresses.

Washington AP Charles B Shuman president of the American Farm Bureau Federation criticized the Kennedy administration feed grain plan as complicated and dangerous. He warned higher price supports for feed grains and soybeans plus acreage cuts would disrupt livestock poultry and dairy sectors while encouraging higher per acre yields on old acres offsetting reduced acreage. The Farm Bureau backs a broader land retirement program without raising supports.
Eastern Kansas faces drizzle occasional showers and possible thunderstorms today and tonight, with snow likely in the western counties as a new cold front moves in. Lindsborg, Mentor, New Cambria, and Langley report measurable rain while the storm centers over the Oklahoma Panhandle and heads northeast. The system exits Saturday, but a new storm approaches from the west bringing renewed unsettled conditions.
The Weather Bureau issued a severe weather warning for parts of southern Kansas, Oklahoma and north central Texas. Tornadoes are expected between noon and 6 p.m. CST along a corridor roughly 60 miles on either side of a line from Abilene, Texas to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
A 7-year-old boy, Robert Maison, was treated for bruises after colliding with a car at 3rd and Lafayette. The car driven by Mrs. Elmer Peterson sustained $10 damage and the bicycle $15. In a separate incident on US 169 near the city line two drivers, John Birner and Phillip Ross, reported a noninjury crash with significant vehicle damage. A third noninjury collision near Erie involved John Finley and Howard Kennedy with rear and front end damage.
A Miami boy aged about 12 wanted to stay home from school and told his mother he was not sick. He rode his bicycle toward school but was struck and killed by a car two blocks from home.
