In Emporia Kansas Mrs. Loren Flowers runs a lunch program at Butcher Children's School and adds juice to classes at mid morning calling it liquid sunshine. One pupil misinforms parents that Mrs Flowers gave them liquid moonshine prompting consternation.
Area forecast notes considerable cloudiness and cooling with tonight in the 20s and Tuesday near 40. Snow depth ranged from a half inch to eight to ten inches in various Kansas regions, with overnight lows from 11 in Russell to 30 in Olathe.
Independence Kansas hosts Lincoln Day with a 340 guest dinner as U.S. Rep. John Anderson urges unity and notes Nixon’s need to unite the nation. Speakers include Sen. Bob Dole and Kansas AG Kent Frizzell. Local Republicans and residents attend the Booth Hotel event and Lincoln Day Club elects John Glades president.
Liberal Kansas hosts a Shrove Tuesday pancake race against Olney England with at least a dozen Liberal entrants led by Janice Grant and Kathleen West. Olney holds a 10-9 edge in the series begun in 1950 as Mary Dix of Olney seeks the 1968 international title. Liberal festivities include services, contests, parade, Miss Flipper contest, air show, and a 11:55 a.m. start.
Berry L. Cannon, 33, an electronics engineer from Panama City, Florida, died at 610 feet while inspecting air leaks for Sealab 3 near San Clemente Island. Four divers descended in a pressurized capsule. Cannon suffered cardiac arrest mid dive and was returned to the surface. The other three divers are safe, and the mission proceeds as planned.
The Kansas House introduced 49 proposals on longer legislative terms, higher lawmaker pay, and mandatory reapportionment every five years. Other measures include an elective highway commission, a state minimum wage, higher liquor taxes, and public-sector bargaining. Speaker Strowig extended the deadline to adjournment to accommodate drafting demands after his illness.
The fourth suspect in the murder of Kenneth L. Ketter, 20, Wichita, was jailed in Sedgwick County after capture near Blackwell Oklahoma. John L. Phillips, 18, faces first degree murder kidnapping and felonious assault charges. Two others, Charles E. Mefford and Robert Campbell, both 20 and 22, were jailed on the same charges. Ralph E. Cluck, 24, is charged as an accessory.
Neosho County Soil Conservation District honored three top soil conservation award winners James White R. 1 Galesburg R. 2 and George Stump Parsons R. 1 at a 350 person Erie meeting. Good year award went to Earl Heinhardt Chanute R. 3. Poster winners Kenny Smith Randy Ermey Timmy McMillan led the list with several honorable mentions.
The Neosho County Community Junior College nursing program faced withdrawal of a federal WIN grant meant for a January start. Officials traced the missteps to Coffeyville area oversight and unclear promises from state education administrators.
The note playfully comments that the best part of the Liberal Olney pancake race is that no one has to eat the pancakes. It signs off with “Yours” in a sly, cheeky tone.
