Bill to Outlaw Fireworks Sale In House Hopper

C of C Groups In Busy Week

Five Neosho Families Presented Soil Awards

About 750 people filled the Erie high school gym for the Neosho County Soil Conservation District annual meeting. Banks from Chanute Erie Thayer Stark and St Paul funded a meal served by Erie cooks and Kayettes. Five farm families received Bankers Conservation Awards for soil practices. Blaine Heady Erie R1 won the Good year Award.

Dedication of Erie post office draws 500 attendees

About 500 people attended the dedication of the new Erie post office on Saturday with an open house. U S senator Frank Carlson of Kansas delivered the main address, Robert Wood from the Wichita postal office spoke for the department, and Ted Kyle welcomed guests. Ed Brady presented a flag, raised by an American Legion color guard, as the Erie Chamber of Commerce sponsored the ceremony.

Freezing weather expected as Kansas cools after today's warmth

The Weather Bureau forecasts a rapid drop with a cold Pacific front moving southeast through Kansas. Highs today range from 50 in the northwest to 60 in the southeast, with nighttime lows in the 20s to near 30.

Sheriff’s sale nets single bid on Erie land parcel

A Bank of Commerce bid 3,531.59 was the only offer for a half interest in 200 acres near Erie. The amount included the mortgage balance, delinquent taxes, and legal fees. The land lies about 1.5 miles south and 1 mile west of Erie.

Lenten Series in Tribune Features 46 Authors

The Tribune will publish a Lent series beginning Wednesday with 40 personal stories of faith in action. Each piece is written by a different author, including actors TV stars scientists and sports figures along with others who found meaning in God. Weekday installments will run during Lent.

Kennedy Proposes Health Insurance Tax Increase Plan

President Kennedy sent Congress a draft bill financing a health insurance program for 14.2 million Americans aged 65 and older with a 1.5 billion increase in Social Security taxes. Varndell Farm Home Damaged by Fire Near Chanute

Attic of the E. A. Varndell farm home five miles west of Chanute and half a mile south of old highway K39 was damaged by a fire on Saturday. Firefighters arrived late due to faulty location information and poor roads but credit prompt family and neighbor actions with limiting the loss. Fire officials said the fire likely started in a utility room from a hot water heater.

Gale Moss Fired From Turnpike Post

Gale Moss was discharged as a special consultant by the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The firing followed a Jan 23 decision to hire Moss and a later vote by the board, including Gov. John Anderson expressing support for reorganizing the authority. Moss previously served as turnpike manager and earned 16 500 to 25 000 dollars annually.

Burns Are Fatal Bill Aims to Shrink Commission

Boy Wounded In Accidental .22 Rifle Discharge

Weekend Break-in at Joint Rural High School

A break-in at Joint Rural HighSchool over the weekend caused about 35 dollars in property damage and 2.73 dollars in cash loss. Entry was through a west window and two vending machines inside the building were forced open. The Erie sheriff's office reported the incident.

Driver Arrested in Iola on DWI and Reckless Driving Charges

Harold K. Thornhill, 21, of Iola was arrested by police at 12:20 am Sunday on driving while intoxicated and reckless driving charges. He was released on $150 bond and faces a police court hearing Thursday after officers stopped his car at Lincoln and Main following it for several blocks.
