Left Hand Pitch remodeling at police headquarters adds space for offices and files. Floyd Yahns and Elmer Winter shift the south entrance door to the east and relocate the business desk. A partition will be altered, a booking window added, and cabinets installed along the inner east side to hold criminal files daily reports bonds fines bad checks and traffic records.
Western Europe endures a severe cold spell with fresh snow and mounting deaths. The death toll tops 333 in two weeks, as missing persons and avalanches strike Yugoslav villages and Macedonia’s relief flights falter.
Gov. Fred Hall intends to appoint Ivan Wassberg a Manhattan hardware dealer as 1st district highway commissioner effective April 1. Wassberg, chair of Riley County Republican Central Committee, would replace Harold K. Snider of Lawrence whose term expires April 1.
In Formosa Strait observers noted a subdued atmosphere as both Nationalist and Communist forces marked the birth of the Year of the Monkey. Officials described a calm scene with no major incidents reported.
A cloudburst drowned 10 people near Pelotas in south Brazil as the Pelotas River broke its dikes flooding crops. About 300 passengers were marooned on trains after the flood.
President Eisenhower will fly to Georgia for about a week of rest and outdoor exercise at Humphrey's Thomasville plantation. He may decide during the visit whether to seek re election. White House says he departs Wednesday at 10 30 a m aboard Columbine III and lands at Spence Air Force Base Moultrie Ga after about two and a half hours. He will then drive to Thomasville. The trip follows medical tests completed Saturday with results due late tomorrow. Hagerty says a decision on re election around March 1 is probable but not certain before leaving for Georgia. No news conference planned this week. He is accompanied by Mrs Eisenhower her mother Mrs Doud and Maj Gen Snyder and by Secretary and Mrs Humphrey.
The Soviet Union rejects the use of foreign troops in the Middle East without prior agreement and UN Security Council approval. It warns that expansion of aggressive activity would fall within Soviet influence and affirms defense of noninterference and regional sovereignty. The statement references Eisenhower Eden talks and possible international frontier guards.
Ronald Dean Haynes age 16 son of Carl and Mrs. Haynes of 1020 North Garfield Chanute was shot in the left foot in a hunting accident northeast of Chanute Saturday. Junior Marsh Herbert Vance and Tommy Morehead were with him when the 22 caliber rifle discharged during target practice. The bullet passed through Haynes behind the toes and he was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital.
Harold James Roberts 25, a former Lawrence resident, died yesterday after a target pistol discharged while reloading. Undersheriff Vernon Robinson said witnesses reported the gun fired at close range, striking Roberts in the head.
Police report details a backing driver scraping a parked car owned by A L Burns and colliding with a stopped car driven by Charles Murrell, then hitting a Consolidated Gas Utilities vehicle. A second incident near Santa Fe involved Raymond Markham’s car rear ending by Charles Reese, with Kay Crumline sustaining a minor head bump. John Daugherty’s car also struck a rock post at City Park.
In Wheeling West Virginia twin 14 year olds deny involvement in the killing of 9 year old Cub Scout David Powell. Police report Powell’s skull was crushed and a knife nicked his chest. The brothers admitted owning a knife but said they lost it last Tuesday after eight hours of questioning.
In downtown Phoenix eight Brahma steers broke from a feed pen and caused chaos. Four were cornered after about an hour while four were killed. A steer charged Union Station baggage room scattering travelers as police fired 33, 16, and 14 shots at three animals. Sergeant Weil said he fired 10 times but the beast kept coming until a high powered rifle felled it.
An automobile veered across U S Highway 50 near Kendall Kansas and crashed into a driveway culvert killing two people. Mrs Millie Getcy Clare 64 of Dodge City was killed outright and her companion Clarence Andrew McConnell 76 of La Junta Colorado died later in Garden City hospital. They were en route to La Junta where McConnell was to help sell her car.
A Fort Riley soldier was killed and three others injured in a one car crash Saturday night on Highway K18, one mile east of Fort Riley. The deceased was identified as Pfc. Rayfield B. Taylor. Injured were Pvt. John T. Bomma rito, Sgt. Paul A. Barrier, and Sgt. Augusta Mitchell.
John Richardson Bland fell on his wife’s waxed floor and broke his wooden leg. He will return to work tomorrow as a guard at State Road Camp 31.

Police double detective force to hunt a gang tied to a string of strong arm robberies in Kansas City. Victims, mostly seniors carrying groceries, suffered beatings as groceries bills and jewelry were taken in a three day spree.
A Saturday fire in Randolph roared through Sheldon Implement Co causing an estimated 175000 to 200000 in damage. Owner Richard Sheldon lists the building tractors tires refrigerators washing machines food freezers spare parts and company records among losses. Randolph volunteers and Waterville and Olsburg fire units prevented spread to three other business buildings.
A three story Beggle meats division building collapsed in downtown Toledo after a worker lit a cigarette. Four men were buried in rubble. Paul Borcherding was found dead while Stanley Damschroder Melvin Kegelman and James Libhart were later located. Damschroder and another man survived with burns and injuries and were hospitalized. The blast damaged adjacent stores and scattered debris in a four block area with extensive window breakage. Fire Chief estimated losses at over a million dollars.
The Toronto damsite in Woodson County will call for bids on February 24 for a concrete spillway and embankment completion with an estimated cost exceeding 95 million dollars. The contract covers 678 feet of spillway and overflows, 650 000 cubic yards of fill, 3 600 feet of roadway, 8 spillway gates, 7 sluice gates, and substantial steel and electrical work. Bids are slated to open around April 4.
A bluish white meteor with a brilliant orange tail flashed across the California sky just after 1 a.m. seen from Santa Clara to El Centro and Winslow Arizona. Observers reported the sighting lasting 10 to 30 seconds and witnesses at Camp Irwin noted objects appearing to fall nearby.
Bartender Jim Smith fired at a prowler who cut a main power line plunging half of north Phoenix into darkness. The prowler escaped in the blackout as Smith, interrupted by a full bar, offered little more than a quip.
State Accident Records lists traffic fatalities in the last 48 hours and year totals. For 1956 the counts show 3 in the last 48 hours and 56 to date, with a comparison note to the same period in 1955 at 60.

The City of New Orleans streamliner traveling near 80 mph struck a crude barrier across the tracks three miles north of Memphis. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev tightens grip as he removes Sergei Kruglov and A M Puzanov from top posts and replaces them with N P Dudorov and M A Yasnov. In Lithuania M A Gedvilas is replaced by M V Shumauskas amid unnamed reasons.
Mr and Mrs Felix Bouray healed from a two car collision near Madisonville Texas during Christmas. They were flown by John Ferguson of Dickerhoot Flying Service to a Madisonville hospital and back home Saturday. Bouray chief engineer at the city electric plant returned to duty today and faces two weeks light duties. Mrs Bouray, most seriously hurt, rode on a litter and now walks with crutches.
Forecaster Tom Arnold predicts a spring lift for Kansas with highs in the 50s in all sections tomorrow and lows in the 30s tonight. Partly cloudy skies expected through Tuesday with no precipitation over the weekend and western areas reaching the 50s yesterday. Dodge City and Goodland hit 52 while Russell peaked at 38.
Rodessa Louisiana residents watch a 400 member town as crews repair a leaky water tank after four days without water. Water has been hauled from farms and a nearby refinery while meals and baths are unavailable. Repairs were underway with hopes to finish by nightfall.
Franklin Swope of 7208 Katy was taken into custody Saturday night on speeding and operating a motor vehicle under the influence. He was later released after posting bonds of 135 dollars. The charge was set for February 20, per police headquarters report.
