Mrs. Barker of Chanute is identified as Florence Barker a Tulsa stockholder guardian of Carolyn Anderegg. The Tribune details calls from Mrs. Gardner and Dan Gardner with connections to Crescent Petroleum Corp Tulsa and Chanute addresses. Weather notes report January moisture in Chanute: .25 inch total, driest since 1954.
Pittsburg State College offers Advanced Educational Psychology 310 in Chanute this semester. Dr. Herbert Rumford teaches the Thursday 6:30 p m class at the Junior College. Sixteen extension courses are offered to eleven Kansas cities this spring.
In Memphis a terrified hostage died when a fleeing gunman’s vehicle crashed after a police knock on a motel cabin door. Three other hostages were injured and the gunman, an escaped Michigan convict, was captured with his wife Brenda Sargent. Police pinned the escape on the Warrant.
A motel gunfight erupts when Sargent and his wife open fire on pursuing officers. Furr is wounded in the wrist as Lt. Hill joins the duel. The Sargents commandeer a car, Brenda fires twice but jams. The vehicle crashes. the pair are tracked down in backwater and surrender without resistance.
Police investigated two non injury accidents. At Main and Central a 1949 Ford panel truck driven by A. E. Clark collided with Marvin Knapp’s 1957 Mercury, front left damage to the truck and right side damage to the car. At Main and Lincoln a 1956 Volkswagen driven by Harold Dickerson was rear ended by George Gaudern’s car, rear damage to the Volkswagen.
Kansas City Federal Reserve district led last week in department store sales with a 12 percent year over year rise. Western Missouri up 9 percent, Kansas 4 percent, while national volume dropped 5 percent. Wichita sales remained steady from 1960 levels.
Six chain saws valued at about $800 were stolen in a break in at Geoffrey Motor and Implement Co. 810 N Main. Sheriff Jerry Sloan said entry was gained by breaking a rear door window. five saws were new and one was a demonstrator.
Hong Kong bankers Wong Sik Pun was kidnapped at gunpoint this morning. His son Wong Ying Kan, a prominent businessman and Raymond Wong’s brother, has been missing for 20 months. Raymond Wong, Coffeyville Journal editor, is a Missouri journalism graduate, married to Beth Mummert.
Willie Ornelas of Kansas City and Chanute teens Louie Ornelas and Terry Pittser waived preliminary hearing in city court and were bound over to district court. Bonds set at 2000 dollars for the brothers. Pittser jailed in Erie. Two additional Chanute teens, Pat Sheldon and Jim Bryant, questioned in gas thefts as Pittser implicated them. Sheriff Sloan said Pittser admitted involvement and named others.
Paris says French air force intercepted Soviet President Brezhnev's Ilyushin 18 over the Mediterranean, a regrettable incident prompting an investigation. Algiers and Rabat exchange claims over flight plans and radio contact as tensions rise between Moscow and Paris.
In Topeka a House bill to reorganize the Forestry Fish and Game Commission proposes four regional districts with one member each and a fifth appointed from the state at large. The measure would raise the director’s pay to 12000 a year and bar hires over 60, while requiring wildlife biology training for the director.
Lawrence AP Marcellus M. Murdock publisher of the Wichita Eagle and Beacon received the William Allen White Foundation Kansas Citation for Journalistic Merit for 1961 at the foundation's meeting. Illness kept Murdock and Reed from attending. Reed read his speech and Brinkerhoff read Murdock's acceptance.
Two planning sessions for the state centennial celebration in Neosho County are set for next Thursday. Vern Helard said one meeting targets broad county group participation, the other seeks merchant and industrial cooperation. Invitations have been mailed. The merchant and industrial session begins 3 p.m. at the Tioga Hotel, while the county group meets at 8 p.m. at the Home Savings Association building in Lincoln and Walnut.
Kenneth Lee Austin 32, of Olathe Kansas construction worker with Reno Construction Co. Overland Park died when his car overturned four miles west of Cole Camp on U S 65. Trooper said the high speed crash threw him from the vehicle. He worked on a road relocation near the Pomme de Terre dam at Hermitage Missouri.
TOPEKA AP reports Kansas traffic death log shows 0 fatalities in the 24 hours to 9 am as February 1961 records a drop to 49 deaths in February 1961 compared with 39 in February 1960, reflecting a comparative period trend.
Barbara Franklin of 919 S. Highland filed in district court for $15,379 and costs stemming from a traffic crash at 142% Santa Fe on January 12. Defendant is Clifford W. Mead, formerly of Stark, now 719 S. Highland. Plaintiff seeks $15,000 for injuries plus $100 medical and $379 for damage to a 1954 Chevrolet.
Richard Harder of the State Board of Mental Health spoke to 22 members at the Neosho County Mental Health Association meeting in Sawyer Hall. He outlined county programs, noted education and volunteer services as key preventive efforts, and discussed needs assessments.
