The administration's 11.6 billion tax cut bill moved toward final Senate passage after clearing the House. Amendments remain on depletion allowances and public utility regulation as Democrats push to preserve 7 percent and 3 percent investment credits for various industries.
AT Innsbruck Austria three U S team members were arrested for theft and disturbing the peace after a police chase. Skier Bill Marolt of Aspen Colorado and two tobogganists George Farmer of Seattle and Mike Hessel of Eugene Oregon were charged with theft. Marolt also charged with driving without a license.
The Kansas Senate advanced two finance bills to balance the 1965 budget, delaying $12.5 million in sales tax to counties and allowing $4 million to shift between funds. In a morning session it also approved park appropriations totaling up to $278,000 for seven parks, plus $60,000 for out-of-state dentistry student aid. The measures face House action and potential vetoes, with Governor Anderson holding line-item veto power.
Cuba informed the United States via the Swiss Embassy that water to the Guantanamo Naval Base would be shut off until 36 Cuban fishermen held in the United States are released. The action, announced Havana time at noon, followed by reports that the base had not yet received word.
Washington AP A House Agriculture Committee proposal calls for a multimillion dollar crash program of tobacco health research. It would set up laboratories and field stations with locations chosen by the Secretary of Agriculture, needing about 5 to 10 million dollars to begin. The effort follows a government panel report noting health hazards from cigarette smoking and aims to maximize health assurances in tobacco use.
At Chanute JayCees meeting Topeka Motor Vehicle Department safety division representatives Paul Johnson and Woody Smith presented a safety film used at drivers improvement clinics after three violations in 12 months. They also distributed motorists test copies and discussed prior Radio Day and awards banquet projects, the upcoming Miss Chanute Pageant on April 4, and a new volunteer firemen alert system to start within six months. New members George Heger Carl Autry and Keith Dodd were welcomed, bringing club membership to 41.

The County School Unification Planning Board approved a plan to create two districts in Neosho County. Chair Robert D. Ward announced the decision after a Tuesday Erie meeting. Final approval rests with county voters and the state superintendent before a July 1 1966 start date. District A will include Chanute and nearby areas with boundaries extending west to Wilson County, east to eight miles to cover most of Fairfield, and south along a line near Earlton. Earlton itself is not included.
Four Syracuse University students missing for four days in heavy snow on Mount Jefferson were found alive atop a mountain hut at about 5500 feet. They walked from the shelter to a base camp with a 100 mile per hour wind and a rescue helicopter from Dow Air Force Base freed them in good condition. The hikers were Robert Koppe Peter Capelli Craig Fournier and Peter Bradford.
Bob D. Hamilton of 602 N Forest faced parole violation charges in city court, which were dismissed after authorities found the alleged violation unrelated to liquor for a minor. The minor admitted purchasing liquor, and Robert Leon McKinstry of Lake Orion Michigan remains jailed on a prior car theft charge.
Attorneys for Charles Finley and Kansas City officials held a closed session during a break in stadium lease negotiations for the Athletics at Municipal Stadium. The city seeks a four year lease while Finley pushes for two. the league deadline is February 15 and talks remain clouded by possible relocation efforts.
Neosho county authorities brought Raymond Beaver of Lola to Chanute on a misdemeanor check violation warrant. He pleaded guilty in city court this morning and was fined 25 dollars plus 8.80 dollars in costs and 10 dollars restitution. He was released after paying 18.80 dollars for costs and the check, with 30 days to pay the fine.
