Alan B. Shepard Jr. and Edgar D. Mitchell became the fifth and sixth men to walk the lunar surface after a near abort due to a computer problem. They tested equipment, collected samples, and aired the first color views from the surface while Stuart Roosa orbited above.
Moon Shepard guided the Antares to a landing 60 feet from target in Fra Mauro highlands and manually override a computer to prevent mission abort. Crew sets up a science station and plans a geology field trip to Cone crater rim to study oldest rocks amid extreme temperatures.
Ugo Cesaro of Hamilton Township and his family appeared in Trenton to cash a $50,000 winning ticket after Ralph Batch, executive director of the State Lottery, recounted a chance meeting about change for a parking meter. The Cesaro family names appear on the ticket.
A $25 000 grant to fund a pilot study on operating an extended school year was recommended by a special joint legislative committee. Funds would go to one or more districts selected by the State Department of Education. The plan envisions four academic quarters with flexible attendance and reduced loads for work outside school.
A Kansas House bill would cap attendance fees at 25 percent of operating costs per student, potentially more than doubling tuition at Neosho County Junior College. College President Dr. J C Sanders notes students would pay $4 per credit hour and $35 in fees each semester, totaling $60 tuition for a 15 credit hour load plus additional fees.

A Kansas Senate bill would abolish separate state income tax returns and base state tax on a percentage of the federal return. Introduced by Senators William Dearth Parsons and Jack Janssen, the measure aims to simplify filings and apply the federal graduated tax scale to Kansas taxpayers.
The Neosho County Board of Realtors approved a resolution in favor of retaining the city manager commission form of government for Chanute. David Robinson, president, said the 14 member group endorsed the measure at its regular meeting.
Contributions toward a $400,000 burn treatment unit at the University of Kansas Medical Center total about $50,000 including a memorial fund by relatives of Kathy Kihm of Chanute. Kihm, 19, died in October from burns after a Lawrence apartment fire. A relative hopes to mobilize every Kansas woman to give $1 to the fund to help save about 85 Kansans who die from burns each year. Dr. Frank W. Masters says the fund could fully establish and equip the unit.
