Kansas Legislature Eyes Looming Adjournment and Bills
The Kansas Legislature plans to adjourn this week and next, then extend sessions to reduce the workload. The Senate tackled bills to place the State Superintendent of Public Instruction on a statutory basis, military training in colleges, and 27 municipal measures easing home rule. Bills would let cities contract with each other and with the federal government for water in federal reservoirs, allow public bodies to determine sewer needs where no health board exists, raise fire equipment levies, and issue at large bonds for street work and road resurfacing. The House considered limiting milk sales to Grade A products with small farm-quantity exceptions and fines for violations. A joint House-Senate subcommittee will study school finance foundation plans, and the Senate Military Affairs Committee proposed giving the State Board of Regents the say on compulsory military training in higher education.

Prominent Chanute Businessman Hugh T. Jones Dies
Hugh T. Jones Jr., 47, longtime Chanute businessman and former Navy officer, died at home of a heart ailment. He chaired the Bank of Commerce board and led the Chanute Lumber Co. He held state and local Republican posts and served on the Neosho Memorial Hospital board. Survived by his wife Doris Reeves and three sons, memorial services set for Grace Episcopal Church. Johnson Mortuary in charge.

Highway Patrol to Enforce 1965 License Tags
The highway patrol will enforce display of 1965 license tags starting March 2. A tag must be displayed on the vehicle it is issued for. Erie County Treasurer Marion Showalter reported Neosho county tag issuance running four to five days ahead of last year with 5,565 auto and 2,087 truck licenses issued year to date. A 50 cent penalty for late registration begins Feb 16 plus another 50 cents the following month. Transfers must occur within 10 days of purchase or trade, and untransferred vehicles cannot legally be driven until registered and licensed even to Erie for the tag.

Intersection Collision Causes Extensive Car Damage
At Main and Larson intersection around 12 10 p m yesterday two cars collided without injuries. A 1957 Buick driven by Mrs Elmer Hemphill 35 of 203 S Larson was westbound and hit a 1964 Pontiac driven by Barbara Willcott 15 of 1220 W 2nd which had stopped at a stop sign. Willcott said she did not see the other car. Damage was about 300 to the Hemphill car and 500 to the Willcott car.

Gold bullion worth 280000 missing from Capetown Castle
Gold bullion valued at 280000 disappeared from the liner Capetown Castle after arrival in Southampton. Ten boxes were missing and Scotland Yard sealed the ship to begin an investigation. The highway patrol will conduct selective enforcement road checks in Neosho County on February 13. Capt. Stay of execution granted in Kansas farm killings case
Justice Byron R. White granted a stay of execution for Richard Eugene Hickock who faced death for the 1959 Holcomb Kansas family killings.
