Cadet Curl Named to West Point Dean’s List

Cadet Richard L. Curl of the United States Military Academy earned a dean’s list honor for scholastic achievement in the past term. Congressman Myron V. George praised the record of a district youth as Curl continues his third year at West Point and has appeared on the dean’s list every year since entry.

Balloting Low Among Retail Merchants Centered in Co op Question

Balloting on retailer organization is light as only 21 ballots have been returned to Dave Evans vice president of the chambers retail division. One hundred twenty eight ballot forms were mailed Tuesday with a Saturday return deadline. Evans urged merchants to vote claiming participation shapes how retailers organize for cooperation and promotion.

City Utilities Sales Reach 1954 Total Of $917 765

Chanute’s annual utility report shows 1954 total sales of gas water and electricity rose to $917 765.71 from $887 823.80 in 1953, with gas 243 185.37 water 152 299.19 and electric 522 281.15. The report notes transfers to the general fund and library and details bond debt and street sewer improvement obligations.

Contractor Starts Work on Olson Supermarket

A. B. Olson announces Universal Construction Co. of Kansas City has begun work on the Olson supermarket at Main and Plummer. About the footings are poured as the 60 by 145 foot brick tile and block store rises. The contract calls for completion within 120 days.

Tax Free Bequests Bill Proposed in Kansas Legislature

Topeka reports a bill being prepared to exempt bequests to Kansas educational charitable and religious institutions from taxes. Current law taxes gifts from out of state estates from 5 percent on 25 000 dollars to 15 percent on gifts over 500 000.

Three From Neosho Seek Paroles From State Prison

Three men from Neosho County serving state prison terms for passing bad checks will apply for paroles in April, per an announcement from Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing. Ray Brown, M. K. Beatty, and Norman Nichols are named. Brown had a 1 to 10 year sentence after a May 14, 1947 no fund check guilty plea. Beatty received a 1 to 5 year term after a October 7, 1953 no fund check guilty plea. Nichols faced a not more than 10 year sentence after a October 19, 1949 second degree forgery guilty plea.

State accident records note traffic fatalities in Topeka over the last 24 hours and year to date. Totals for 1955 show 49 fatalities, while the same period in 1954 recorded 51 fatalities.
