Chanute City Projects Face Delays and Debates in 1976

Chanute Police see leadership changes and year of crime fall

Chanute saw a police leadership shift with Chet Hale becoming chief and Vernon Shultz as assistant chief after Lige Matlock’s 1958 retirement. 1976 crime dropped from 1975 levels, with fewer armed robberies, many DWIs and drug arrests, plus notable incidents including a jail fire, a jailbreak, and a raid on a marijuana party.
