Sharpshooters Kill Man Holding Hostages in Wichita Suburb

In Haysville the officer ordered sharpshooters to fire on Larry Leer after he threatened hostages in a triplex. Leer, a former state hospital patient, was shot through the heart from about 100 feet away. One officer was grazed by a bullet. seven hostages survived.

Chanute boy dies after tractor overturns near town

Gregg Lynn Taylor 13 year old Royster Junior High student died after a tractor overturn on a county road 60 miles south and 1 mile east of Chanute. Sticky fingered Erie man arrested again after car theft

An 18 year old Erie man convicted in Chanute on a misdemeanor theft was arrested at 1 am north of Erie after stealing a car from Cherryvale. Army veteran James Kennedy stationed at Fort Hood was stopped by Neosho County deputies after a three hour search. A Buffalo couple trailed Kennedy to Shaw where he failed to pay for gas. Kennedy left the car and asked a Shaw resident to drive him to Erie, then rode with the resident’s wife to the sheriff. The stolen Cherryvale car was found in Shaw. Kennedy is in Neosho County Jail and charges are possible in Wilson and Montgomery counties.
