Reporter Roger Verdon documents a special police unit operating in rural Kansas as they pursue a crime wave. Local sheriffs coordinate with federal agents to disrupt burglaries and violent incidents affecting farm communities and small towns.
Rural Kansas counties Sumner Kingman and Harper plan a Major Case Squad of 15 officers to handle serious violent crimes. Activation target is next April with a board of sheriffs and police chiefs to decide which cases require squad involvement. A fingerprint expert polygraph operator and photographer are among the screened members.
A wave of tanker incidents spans from California to Puerto Rico with spills in the Delaware and Thames rivers and a major Nantucket oil disaster. EPA chief Train urges stricter standards for foreign tankers as investigations ensue into the Liberian flagged Olympic Games and other vessels.
Governor Bennett says he will ignore the budget division proposal to cut subsidies to nursing homes by about 25 percent. He proposes continuing the 75th percentile payment formula to maintain care for those in need while noting a federal wage mandate for aides and warning of possible service reductions if costs rise.
In Haysville the officer ordered sharpshooters to fire on Larry Leer after he threatened hostages in a triplex. Leer, a former state hospital patient, was shot through the heart from about 100 feet away. One officer was grazed by a bullet. seven hostages survived.
Gregg Lynn Taylor 13 year old Royster Junior High student died after a tractor overturn on a county road 60 miles south and 1 mile east of Chanute. He was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital where he died an hour later. Funeral at Otterbein United Methodist Church burial Greenlawn Cemetery. Memorial set with church. Basketball team canceled practice in his memory.

An 18 year old Erie man convicted in Chanute on a misdemeanor theft was arrested at 1 am north of Erie after stealing a car from Cherryvale. Army veteran James Kennedy stationed at Fort Hood was stopped by Neosho County deputies after a three hour search. A Buffalo couple trailed Kennedy to Shaw where he failed to pay for gas. Kennedy left the car and asked a Shaw resident to drive him to Erie, then rode with the resident’s wife to the sheriff. The stolen Cherryvale car was found in Shaw. Kennedy is in Neosho County Jail and charges are possible in Wilson and Montgomery counties.
