The Chanute Kansas water shortage of 1956 57 prompted a pioneering sewage reuse program. Look magazine and Reader’s Digest highlighted Chanute’s five month recirculation through treatment plants as safer than feared and a potential primary supply saver for droughts.
A three judge federal court in Topeka ruled Kansas Senate district apportionment unconstitutional citing wide population disparities. He faces reckless driving and no license charges. speeding and no license from the highway patrol. A chase began when two cars fled the south city limits on US 169. one was caught, the other eluded. Busby remained in the city jail awaiting a court hearing.

Mrs. Lucy Hataway, 81, died after her clothing apparently caught fire at the kitchen stove while she cooked alone. The body was found by a neighbor in Parsons Kansas.
President Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara conferred at the LBJ Ranch on the Pentagon budget and Vietnam developments. McNamara flew in for dinner, and after late talks began a new round of discussions at breakfast with acting press secretary Joseph Laitin reporting.
Gov. William H. Avery urged definite standards for reapportioning state and federal districts. He noted a three judge panel ruled Kansas Senate must be reapportioned and called for rules on variance limits and which census data to use, highlighting Kansas annual state counts versus the decennial federal census.
The Viet Cong announced a four day ceasefire during Tet from January 20 to January 23, stopping attacks on South Vietnamese forces and government. The United States extended its air war moratorium against North Vietnam for a fourth day with no immediate official response.
Kansas traffic death log shows 52 fatalities for December to date and 653 for 1965 with 665 in the comparable 1964 period. The court also appointed counsel for Thelma Bowker in a separate fire case.
A Santa Fe freight derailment 20 miles west of Emporia blocked the Ellinor to Wellington line. Eighteen cars derailed. crews expected wreckage cleared by today. No injuries reported and cause undetermined. Mail line traffic unaffected.
