Les Matthews a Chamber of Commerce manager bought a plastic satellite launcher as a Christmas present for his son Buz nine year old. He tested it and a satellite struck his nose causing a minor scratch. Matthews joked the government missiles have their difficulties and that Hank the dog dodged the satellite launcher now and then.
A 12 year old altar boy was struck in the jaw by a 22 caliber bullet during the graveside funeral rites for entertainer Anita Sessler in Barstow California. Deputies called the shooting accidental noting three teenage boys with rifles fired practice shots and a rock deflected the bullet. The wound was not serious and rites were quickly ended.
Five young duck hunters in a small boat capsized in the Mississippi River and searchers have recovered clothing and two shotguns but no bodies. Prosecutor Paul E. Williams of Pike County declared the missing youths drowned. The hunters were Harold Niffen 17 George Niffen 16 James Saunders 14 all of near Louisiana and John Clark 21 and Ben Clark 18 of nearby towns.
A 27 year old Topekan Robert Zart fled last night with his three year old son after threatening the mother. Police pursued at speeds up to 90 mph south of Topeka before losing him. Zart has a police record dating to 1943 with prior thefts and jail terms.
In Amarillo Texas a home made bomb exploded during a crowded theater panic ensued with a blinding flash. Four youths suffered minor burns and cuts as bystanders fled into the lobby. Police report an unknown person tossed the device near the screen. Jerry Brewster, 12, was treated and released. Others, including David Palmer 15, James Birchfield 12, and Charles Ray Cox 11, had minor injuries.
In San Antonio a father and mother escaped with four other children while Raul Roque age two and Pablo Roque age six burned to death inside a blazing home. Mrs Roque blinded by an eye disease became hysterical as the father tried to rescue the other children. The boys were found on a charred bed amid the flames.
The administration plans to seek more than 100 million dollars to aid states in raising high school science and math teaching. Proposals include scholarships eight to ten million dollars for needy students, expanded graduate programs, testing and counseling for pupils, and foreign language teaching support. NSF would receive over 50 million dollars annually to update textbooks and fund teacher fellowships and institutes.
Mrs Mildred Thomas of Miami Oklahoma seeks 73000 damages claiming a highway crash killed her husband Ottawa County district judge William M Thomas and injured her The suits filed in U S District Court name James Bannon of Floral Kansas as the defendant alleging he drove intoxicated at 80 miles an hour in the March 10 1956 collision near Kansas City.
Transit workers voted nearly unanimously to accept a two year contract with the Kansas City Public Service Co. Formal signing ends state seizure of the utility effective since November 6. The agreement includes a 15 cent hourly wage increase over a year, raising drivers’ maximum pay to $2.10 an hour. No service interruptions occurred since the contract expired October 31.
The Defense Department approved a 4.5 million dollar project to build a Nike missile defense ring around Kansas City Bases. Plans cover Leavenworth and Gardner Kansas and Excelsior Springs and Pleasant Hill Missouri with construction to start soon and finish in early 1959.

A P Beutel, general manager of Dow Chemical Co. Texas Division, said production cutbacks next year would result in about 800 workers being laid off at the Freeport plant.

In Long Beach California a 15 year old was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 2 year old. The boy smothered the child while on a weekend pass from reform school and later threatened guards when told of the adult prison term. The defense urged a second degree finding for psychiatric treatment, while the prosecutor urged the maximum sentence.
Santa Fe officials say a 2000 copies printing demand for a final labor agreement in a union shop drives the engineers strike threat. 650 engineers along the coast from Albuquerque to San Francisco set a Jan. 4 walkout over 17 disputed points amid mediation since February and a prior federal mediator's withdrawal.
At 1 05 a m a large truck struck the canopy of a service station at 1125 North Santa Fe causing about 200 dollars in damage. Kenneth Chestnut, manager, said the truck driven by W Campbell 60 of Pittsburg tried to pass under the canopy but was too tall. No injuries reported.
Several more trailer spaces have been located aiding the move of the H. Fulton Pipeline Co. to this area. Les Matthews of the Chamber of Commerce said the company is not out of the running, noting workers have moved down but he cannot contact supervisor James McGill for a final answer.
State Accident Records Section lists Topeka traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours and year to date for 1957 with counts 1 and 565 respectively, comparing to 1956 figures of 677 for the same period.
An explosion trapped 25 miners at Mine No 31 on the Virginia West Virginia border. Eleven men died and ten others were rescued as officials planned a full inquiry by West Virginia authorities. The blast occurred in a gaseous mine with two separate sections and faulty gas-dispersal equipment suspected.
Missouri Pacific Railroad protested taxes in 60 Kansas counties claiming assessments were 63 percent higher than local properties. It paid 714,862 in first half taxes under protest and will pay the second half due June 20. First half tax bill totaled 1,137,267 with about 63 percent protested. State official Eldon Sloan noted it is the first major utility to pay under protest in Kansas in years and said recovery actions in each county are likely.
Wendell Erickson posted 300 bond in a city court assault case involving Morris and Sylvia Pack following a theft dispute over a battery at Chanute Iron and Metal Co. Trial set for 3 30 p m January 3. Hinkle 18 posted 220 bond on theft charge.
A 17 year old hitchhiker confessed to killing two men who gave him lifts near Bath New York. He admitted to shooting Cecil Stratton 42 and Leo Brown 38 with the same pistol for their autos. Stratton’s body was found in Catlin and Brown’s in Corning near the Glass Works. He was charged with first degree murder.
