A chart on display at police headquarters outlines how increasing blood alcohol levels alter behavior from normal at .01 to coma and death near .4. Observers near Walnut and Lincoln watched a girl ride a Shetland pony as a blue and white car trailed and moved alongside.
A 46 year old soldier at Fort Riley was found dead in his Camp Funston room with a head wound from a .22 caliber rifle. Army officials identified the deceased as Master Sergeant John P. Northcut of Sturgis, South Dakota, recently assigned to the 18th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division as a platoon sergeant.
Atchison fire claimed three young lives as a blaze swept part of a home interior. Jacqueline Robin son four Alonzo Robinson three and Sonja Robinson one were killed. Marian two remained in critical condition at a hospital. Fire chief Harley Yocum said the mother left the children alone to visit her mother nearby and the fire centered in a divan in the living room with the children in an adjoining bedroom.
In flood ravaged Northern California a clothing discovery near City Park raises police interest. Garments found behind a score board and in a nearby septic tank include a lace apron a blouse panties a brassier and a gymnasium suit with identifiers and names. Police note the items may indicate nothing or a lead in missing person cases as investigators widen searches and study marks and initials on the fabric.
Washington figures show grants and gifts to American colleges and universities for the 1954 55 fiscal year estimated at 507 million dollars, 168 million more than three years earlier. The total lagged about 100 million from last year’s 608 million dollar demand projection for the next decade. The estimate excludes a Ford Foundation grant of 210 million dollars earlier this month. The survey was released by the American College Public Relations Assn and the Council for Financial Aid to Education.
A crash on U S Highway 60 near Poplar Bluff Missouri killed two soldiers. Pfc Chester Frobase Jr 21 Benton Missouri stationed Fort Sill Oklahoma and Pfc Kenneth C Roll 19 Belle Plaine Kansas stationed Fort Campbell Kentucky were identified as the dead. The driver drifted asleep before the early morning crash per Missouri highway patrol.
Thayer reports Newland school destroyed December 21 by a gas line explosion northwest of town. Lowell Morrison says Cities Service Gas Co. will provide a trailerhouse for temporary classes, with plans to resume Monday and rebuild the school later. Surplus desks borrowed from Neosho County will outfit seven pupils.
State Accident Records Section lists Topeka traffic fatalities. Last 24 hours zero. To date in 1955 total 579. Same period 1954 shows 604.
Army engineers estimated widespread flooding in northern California with about 1 million acres underwater at the flood peak last week. About 600000 acres along the coast and 400000 in valleys were submerged.
The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies through Thursday with a turning cold snap tonight and Thursday. Lows in the 40s, highs around 60 in the southeast, 25 to 35 in the northwest. Occasional snow possible in northwest Kansas. scattered showers elsewhere tomorrow. Forecaster Tom Arnold notes a cold front will touch off moisture, easing drought conditions only slightly.
The Public Health Service announced the release of 1,368,306 doses of Salk antipolio vaccine in Washington. This brings December totals to 3,414,213 cubic centimeters and overall vaccine releases since April 12 to 29,961,831 c.c. at six licensed drug houses.
Warden Arthur Hoffman reports a $200,000 shipment of reflectorizing material ordered for license plates and later cancelled by the Kansas Highway Commission has been hauled from Kansas State Prison. The material, shipped last summer to the prison’s license tag factory, was ordered under authority claimed by Walter A. Rugan, the state highway director, but the commission ruled he had no authority without its approval. The commission voted in September to cancel the order, and Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. said it accepted the cancellation and that the material was moving to a St Louis warehouse. The removal occurred Dec 20 following the department’s order.
Police investigate the mysterious deaths of three elderly Hoening brothers Charles 62 George 64 and Henry 67 in a locked three story brick house in south St. Louis. Autopsies awaited as officers find no signs of violence or poison and note all three were in bed underclothes. George a longtime bookkeeper at a local firm, Charles deaf and housekeeper, and Henry blind.
Kasi Gerald Salmans, 17, died when a tractor overturned while he drove it down an embankment on the Kenneth Jackson ranch. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Salmans.
Gov Fred Hall proposes two new state programs in the 1957 general fund budget including Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital at Chanute and a center for child treatment. The receiving home for children shifts from sales tax to general revenue, while water resources funding rises from 35,000 to 295,784.
Neosho county receives 118010.32 dollars in the semi annual state elementary school aid distributed among 38 districts. Chanute leads with 45775.88 while Erie St Paul Thayer and Galesburg receive smaller amounts. One rural school Valley City has the largest single rural aid. Neosho Valley north of Chanute does not share in aid. Distribution is based on enrollment teacher qualifications and need. A similar distribution is planned for March 10 with the same total amount.
An Army tug towed a large barge up the Sacramento River to rescue between 1500 and 2000 cows stranded on levees near Nicolaus. The State Office of Civil Defense said the tug would transport the marooned cattle to locations where they can be properly fed.
Richfield Oil Corp reports its first well in Boyle Heights east of downtown Los Angeles is completed and flowing at 170 barrels a day with gas production of 60 000 cubic feet daily. Additional wells will be drilled to assess the structure’s potential.
A 14 year old boy Joe King missing after leaving his trailer home for a movie was found murdered in a rural area south of Jacksonville Arkansas. Sheriff Tom Gulley said the death appeared tied to a possible sex crime or anger toward the boy. Autopsy showed strangulation and a non fatal head blow. Coroner Howard Dishough said death likely occurred late Friday. The boy’s stepfather Sgt James R King stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base may be questioned. The boy’s mother is in shock and under medical care.
Cherokee Kas. Richard Inman eight died while playing cowboy when a .22 rifle held by his 15 year old uncle Richard Edwards Jr accidentally discharged. The bullet struck Inman in the back of the head according to Coroner W. G. Rinehart.
In Charlottesville Albemarle County a housewife found a SPCA shelter puppy that resembled a neighbor’s missing dog and presented it to the neighborhood children as a replacement. The dog matched the missing pup closely and delighted the children.
Farmers in the Walnut Porterville Kimball area form Save the Quail Association to protect landowner rights and curb unsportsmanlike hunting. They elect George Cobb president and plan a Jan 3 meeting at Minnie Attkinson farm. Membership costs $1. plan includes possible hired officer to enforce laws.
Gov. Fred Hall announced a proposed 1957 budget of 262.9 million with only 9.61 million in new revenue. He removes the state general property tax and expects other sources to cover the shortfall. Estimates differ from legislators, with Wunsch and Cavaness predicting higher needs. Hall cites rising costs, federal funds, and capital projects as factors and lists agency requests versus his recommendations across General Government to Highways and Transportation.
