Washington AP report says the consumer price index rose to 127.4 in November from 127.3 in October with food prices increasing for the first time in November since 1951. The rise also boosted cost-of-living wage increases for about 225,000 workers and reduced after-tax earnings for factory workers due to shorter hours.
Stark Elsmore and Savonburg begin toll free dialing today with a Chanute center. The Crawhan Telephone Co. merged Stark Mutual Savonburg Mutual and Katy Tele phone into one exchange serving about 600 subscribers on a seven digit number. Operators will be laid off at year end.
The Weather Bureau announced a shift from cold wet patterns to mild dry conditions across Kansas. Forecaster Richard Garrett noted a warm front moving east, with Hill City at 41 degrees this morning after subzero temps yesterday. Highs are expected in the 30s east and the 40s west, with lows near freezing.
A Lancaster AP report describes Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas Eve customs in barns. Farmers Martha and Paul observe 11 to 12 o'clock vigil to hear animal talk and follow beliefs linking dew moistened hay and bread offerings to safety in the new year. It notes Plain People practices, with Amish limited gifts and no trees or lights, and Mennonites stressing religious observance over festivity.
Erie Neosho County treasurer Mrs Freda Locke reported tax receipts through Wednesday at 971 214 96. Including unprocessed mail payments, collections are expected to exceed half of 1960 total 1 998 459 79. Tuesday’s over the counter payments alone reached 136 411 47 as final day for first half payments without penalty.
A Junction City grocer, E. T. Enzor, about 60, was seriously injured in a late night robbery at his store. He told police two men robbed him of about 80 dollars after beating him with an iron pipe. He was admitted to City Hospital with a fractured skull and injuries to his left hand.
A. G. Andrade, 67, oiler for the Santa Fe railroad, died after a box car ran over his body and nearly severed his left arm in Santa Fe yards. Workmen said Andrade slipped and fell in front of the car as the switch engine shoved it Thursday night.
The city saw a Thursday high of 80 degrees with shirtsleeves and shorts in evidence. Forecasters said the unseasonable warmth would linger into the weekend, boosting outdoor activity and prompting residents to swap coats for light clothing.
A switching foreman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, 51, was knocked from a flatcar and crushed between the car and rock and dirt while being pushed into the U S ordnance storage grounds in Atchison Kansas. He was Robert H Smith brother of John Smith postmaster Atchison and Harrison Smith a Garden City lawyer.
Mr and Mrs Tilfred E Knight both 67 of Wayooka Oklahoma were killed when their car collided with an oilfield truck eleven miles west of Anthony on Highway 14. Grandson James Howard Knight aged 14 from Clovis New Mexico suffered a dislocated hip and bruises as they traveled to visit relatives in Wichita.
In Kansas, five officials branded Leahy resignation a political trick as Dave Leahy announces March departure after 17 years as director of Forestry Fish and Game. Leahy plans to tie up loose ends and later move to Wichita while commissioners debate reorganization to three members.
The Associated Press reports fires in Chicago Hartford City Baltimore Poteet and New York City killed 17 people including 14 children and two mothers. Victims include Myrtle and Kenneth Brown in Chicago and Miss Jean Davis in New York. Causes remain undetermined for three blazes.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile visit yielded 154 pints of blood, six short of the 160 pint quota, with 218 potential donors, 178 scheduled and 40 drop ins. Eleven Chanute donors hit the one gallon mark. Earl Ostrander donated four gallons, George Riker Jr. reached two gallons, and several individuals earned one gallon certificates. Chanute firemen assisted with equipment handling at the First Methodist church.
Truman and MacArthur both in New York deny the claim that the general sought to use atomic bombs in Korea and beyond. Truman says he gave his opinion without documentary proof and will not comment further. MacArthur insists reports are completely false and cites sworn testimony.
Topeka AP reports Kansas traffic fatalities within a 24 hour window ending 9 am. The December 1960 period records 484 deaths versus 562 for the same period in 1959, highlighting a decline.
PARSONS Midwest Precore Co. of Kansas City was the apparent low bidder for asphaltic concrete surfacing on US59 in Neosho County at a bid session by the State Highway Commission. Midwest bid 160 538.59 for 6.1 miles and 225 854.71 for nine miles, plus 6 209.15 for a 0.3 mile stretch of K108 to Erie.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon and his wife and two daughters Patricia and Julie attended a Thursday night showing of Fiorello on Broadway. Nixon stood during intermission to acknowledge the applause waving to the crowd.
Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher landed in London to join Taylor’s three children for Christmas. Taylor said she felt on top of the world and ready to begin work on Cleopatra, delayed by illness bad weather and other troubles.
A 19-year-old Chanute youth, William Dean Gibson, was arrested after a high speed chase in a 1955 Mercury stolen from 23 W Main. He is held on parole violation with additional charges possible for an assault on a 15-year-old girl and related thefts and damage.
