Palen’s Grocery in Southeast Kansas hosts its annual Santa visit drawing over 175 children. The store closes to shoppers for about two and a half hours as youngsters line up to meet Santa and receive cakes candy apples and soda. L. F. Erickson returns as Santa for a second year.
India announced the capture of Damao and Diu and reported gains on all fronts in Goa as Nehru's government sent troops tanks ships and bombers. Portugal denied occupation and pledged negotiations while alleging a scorched earth defense and minefields.
President Kennedy has a heavy head cold and rests in Palm Beach after touring Puerto Rico Venezuela and Colombia. Doctors Burkley and Sayad examined him onboard the flight and say the illness will not delay his return to Washington or planned Bermuda Christmas vacation. He will hold the Wednesday news conference as scheduled.
Two traffic accidents Saturday left extensive car damage but no injuries. At 4 a.m. a 1959 Ford driven by Charles A. Westhoff, 22, of St Paul R 1, rolled over on K57 near St Paul after he fell asleep. he was fined $25 and costs for reckless driving. At 12:15 p.m. a 1955 Chevrolet driven by Mary McMillen, 40, of Earlton R 1 skid on an icy county road near Earlton and struck a utility pole. both cars were totaled.
In Topeka a 2-month-old, David Bowers, was found wedged beside his bed and stopped breathing. A hospital attendant aided with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and external heart massage, with nurse and doctors clearing mucus prior to his recovery. The infant was taken to St. Francis Hospital and survived the incident.
The temperature in Jacksonville reached 81 degrees on Sunday, breaking the city’s 30 year record for the date, surpassing the former high of 80 degrees.
Fog and drizzle blanket eastern Kansas as a fresh cold air mass moves in from Nebraska. Temperatures fall to 0 to 5 degrees below zero in the northwest and near 20s in the southeast with 2 to 6 inches of snow on the ground in the northwest and 1 to 2 inches in the southeast.
A district court jury or judge awarded $500 in favor of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Staggs for their infant daughter Vickie Lynn Staggs injured when a car driven by W A Coonrod backed over her on October 17 in Chanute. The child, 22 months old, was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital for scratches and bruises and released after an overnight observation.
With one week before Christmas, 34 families remain on the Chamber of Commerce adoption list. Chamber Manager Joe Melnyk said eleven new families were added, totaling 64 entries, of which 31 have been adopted. Most remaining listings are larger families verified by the county welfare department and the school nurse.
A Piper supercruiser crashed after striking a power line near Ponca City Oklahoma killing Steve Dye 20 and pilot O L Groom 71. Dye’s wife 18 was in critical condition. Oil field workers found the wreckage two miles southeast of the city after bad weather and a 4 15 p m power outage. The Dyes had moved from Arkansas City Kansas about three months ago.
Postmaster Leif Nelson credited early Christmas mail with smooth operation at Chanute Post Office. No peak overload has occurred and mail is handled at a rapid, steady pace. He praises package wrappings and advises residents to place return addresses on one side and Christmas seats on the back of envelopes.
David Gray, 27, arrived at a Dallas hospital with the top of his left index finger missing after an encounter with a lion at a cage. Gray said his unbuckled shoes caused a fall against the bars, waking the animal, and he deflected blame onto himself rather than the lion.
Neosho County treasurer Mrs. Freda Locke reminded residents that Wednesday is the final day to pay at least half of 1961 taxes without penalty. If paid, the second half is due by June 20 to avoid penalties. Tax receipts and license mailings are being processed, with notable payments from Santa Fe railroad and local firms.

The rural area development report planned for today at Tioga Hotel was cancelled by weather blocking Kansas State College representatives from arriving. No new date has been set. it had been postponed once before for similar reasons. The report stems from a survey by K State Extension Service conducted a year ago.
Topeka reports 521 traffic deaths in 1961, up from 477 in the same period of 1960. The daily log shows 4 fatalities by Monday at 9 am over the December span.
Pittsburg Kas AP The Pittsburg Tank and Tower Co. will construct a $100,000 office and warehouse south of Pittsburg. Construction starts in January. The firm recently acquired Dixie Tank and Bridge Co of Memphis and operates in four buildings. The new structures will provide twenty two times as much office space as currently.
Six persons were killed in Kansas traffic accidents during the weekend. Two Liberal women died when their car was hit by a Rock Island train a mile west of Liberal. Ft. Riley soldier Pvt. William H. Melcher died in a Belvue one car crash. In Kansas City Kansas Dewey Bryant Jr. and Carol Jobe die in separate crashes. Washburn student Jerry Gragg, 19, dies near Topeka as fog and ice hampered travel.
A fire last week destroyed the four bedroom farm home of Mr and Mrs Lamar Whitson west of Thayer. Three year old Jeffrey Whitson died in the blaze despite efforts to rescue him. The Tribune awards $3 weekly for the best local tip and Mrs Lewis Walker of Thayer won for reporting this tragedy.
A Colorado couple died when their light plane crashed near Concordia Kansas while en route to a family reunion. Victims were Frank J. Homolka 52 and Mary Ruth Homolka 49 of Fort Collins.
