Priest denies priests often break vow of celibacy

The Rev. Eugene C. Kennedy says many American priests remain faithful to celibacy and resist abuses. He notes about half of U S priests occasionally socialize with women, mostly in groups, with only 10 percent dating as couples. Younger clergy show a higher rate. Kennedy criticizes Newsweek for focusing on isolated immature cases.

Self-sufficient couple shuns electricity in rural California

Doc and Shelley Dadtler live off grid in a Sierra foothills cabin near Sacramento. They use kerosene lamps, hand-pumped water, a windmill pump, a wood stove, and an outhouse, supported by neighbors and propane for limited needs. About 30 area families follow similar paths, choosing hard work over energy dependence. Nathaniel, age two, their son, grows up in a 677 square foot home with canned vegetables and a small loft bedroom. The couple, both educated, mortgage a life of self-reliance while teaching and tutoring in a distant rural school district.
