Don Bigge outlined survey goals at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Tioga Hotel. Study will begin immediately with Neosho County as the hub and six other counties in the region may apply results. Forged Checks Passer Captured in Joplin
An escaped Lansing convict identified as the passer of at least five forged checks was captured in Joplin. Harry Cone, 65, escaped from the Lansing State Penitentiary a year ago while serving for forgery. Police tied Cone to checks cashed at Western Auto, Cash L Wagner liquor store, Mason Texaco, Coast to Coast, and McCune drug store, with forged payees Hugh Johnson, Wagner, Hugh Jamerson, Willson, and Willson.

Weather: severe cold across Kansas with zero in Topeka
Topeka reported a zero and Manhattan and Lawrence lows near five as a broad freeze gripped Kansas.
