Driver Loses Leg In Freak Accident

Rep. Al Ullman of Oregon suffered the loss of part of his left leg in a freak auto crash in Stephens City Virginia The door ripped open as he tried to close it and the car veered into a ditch ejecting him Doctors at Winchester Memorial Hospital amputated the leg at the knee.

Trio Arrested For Bilking In Kansas City

Three Chicago men, Charles R. Minor 40 Willie Andrew Nelson 41 and Frank Williams 45, were arrested on confidence game charges after a 75 year old man claimed he lost 2825 from his savings. The victims described a gambling scheme with a mail back ploy and the trio were found with cash and ready to leave town.

Two Youths Rescued After Three Days Adrift in Gulf Stream

In Miami, a United States destroyer rescued James Horn a 19 year old city surveyor draftsman and Arthur Wilhelm a 21 year old delivery driver after drifting 16 foot motorboat for three days. They said they mistook buoy markers and headed offshore. They were found 55 miles south of Miami near Key Largo and had no serious injuries. Horn planned to stay inland and near land in the future.

Train Car Crash Fatal at McPherson

Roger Q. Lane 68 and his wife 69 died after their car struck a Santa Fe freight train at a McPherson crossing last Monday night. Lane, a retired oil field supply house manager, died in a hospital Friday night from injuries. The couple were the only occupants of the car.

The Chamber of Commerce reviewed late shopping hours for Chanute stores to help nighttime shoppers. Most merchants will stay open tonight Thursday and Saturday nights next week, then five consecutive evenings from Monday Dec 18 through Friday Dec 22, with 8 30 pm closings. Elmer Pilgrim aged 44 of 221 Den man was arrested about 12 15 a m on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving after a collision at Lincoln and Main. A 1950 Chevrolet and a 1956 White truck trailer from Dallas collided. three passengers in the car unharmed. The car was a total loss with $100 damage to the truck. Pilgrim posted 150 bond for a police court hearing next Thursday at 4 p m.

Outer Space Death Ray Developed at Martin Rocket Plant

Denver AP reports Dr. Carl L. Kober says a space based death ray using nuclear power will be test ready in 1963. The device would burn at over 100000 degrees and evaporate targets when focused, about the size of a large searchlight, weighing 30000 pounds and uneconomical on earth. Two Car Crash Fatal At Junction City

Mrs. Ralph Coover aged 48 of Junction City died in a two car collision on a snow slick highway south of Junction City. Her husband, 52, was seriously injured. Clarence Gehrke 33 of Topeka driver of the other car was unhurt. Gehrke said the Coover car skidded into his lane as heavy snow fell. Mrs. Coover directed the Little Theater in Junction City.

Jury Panel to Report for Neosho Court Civil Trial
