Junior College students will attend a Hobo Day organized by the Veterans Club. The event features a dance and floor show in the Little Theater at 8 p.m. Activities include a coronation of a hobo king and queen, a kangaroo court, and numbers by the Veterans quartet.
Thirty to 40 members are expected to attend a quarterly meeting here Monday of the Kansas chapter of the Associated Police Communications Officers Inc. John Haugsness will arrange the event. The half day session begins at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Building. Topics include police communications and radio equipment to improve operations. Bill Schmidt of Wichita will preside, with city representatives likely including a police department member and dispatchers Mrs Ruth Stafford and Mrs Lois Cady from the Highway Department.
Kansas Young Republicans opened a two day state convention in Topeka with Sen Karl Mundt of South Dakota as the noon luncheon speaker Delegates were polled on potential 1958 gubernatorial candidates and will hear results at the business meeting tomorrow Phil Kline and Mrs William Addington announced for state chairman and national junior committee woman respectively Judge Thomas Baum of Wichita delivered the keynote at the assembly with discussions on organization voter outreach women in politics and local resources on the agenda
Police arrested 16-year-old Robert Gelman after he confessed to stabbing eight year old girl to death in front of her family's Bronx apartment. Detectives pursued the case as officers charged Gelman with homicide and investigated motive.
Fort Scott native Bob Hembree succeeds A. A. Craig as manager of the B. F. Goodrich store at 112 Main in Fort Scott. Hembree, with the company two and a half years, was moved to Chanute from Fort Scott. Craig shifts after 12 years at Chanute to Enid Oklahoma.
City water and streets departments installed two way radios in service trucks to speed repairs and routine tasks. City manager R J Hayes notes emergency value but savings and efficiency take priority. The units cost about 265 each, reused from factory stock, and mirror police radio systems.
St Louis Baptist Rev Dr Edwin T Dahlberg, inaugurated as head of the National Council of Churches, calls for a program of massive reconciliation to replace the era of massive retaliation. He stresses deeds over talk and says feeding the hungry should outpace sending Sputniks. Dahlberg is the first Baptist leader of the interdenominational body.
The annual all school Christmas vespers will be held at 8 p.m. December 18 in the Memorial building auditorium. Mrs. Howard Hollenshead, head of elementary music, directs the program with the schools' community service vesper series. About 540 students will participate including 100 voice primary and 200 voice elementary choruses, 130 voices from Royster Junior High School under Mrs. Morris Chambers, and 110 from Junior College and Senior High School led by Kenneth Tebow.
The New York Times reports the United States and Britain have agreed to construct and staff four sites in Britain for intermediate range ballistic missiles.
An additional Chanute member of the executive board of the Sekan area Boy Scout council is Dean Skinner, the council office reported today. His name was omitted from a list published Friday.
A Kansas forecast notes a fast moving front brought rain and snow with light totals in eastern counties. Readings show 28.905 inches barometer steady, highs yesterday from 41 in Goodland to 62 in Wichita and Emporia, with overnight lows 17 to 33. Friday brings partly cloudy skies and northwest winds. weekend warmth expected.
Three qualified leaders will teach a basic training session for scoutmasters and assistants at Camp Wonderwood, southeast of town. Bill Slane of Troop 3 will lead, with Felix Bouray and Ralph Garvin as assistants. All hold the scoutmaster training key.

Cape Canaveral reports a 72 foot Vanguard rocket exploded after lifting off, prompting military and scientific teams to convene and determine cause. A repeat test rocket identical to the failed unit remains available at Martin hangar as officials assess pad damage and schedule new miniature satellite launches, with two more trials planned before March.
Winners were to be announced at 2 30 p m at the Southeast Kansas land judging contest following events at the Memorial Building. About 125 4 H and FFA boys registered this morning. Judgings occurred at farms of Ed Zastrow B J Hupp Giles Whitworth and Walter Chappell near town with Gale Mullen county agent in charge.
A Kansas City man was killed and two Wichita men were seriously injured in a head on collision east of Williamsburg. Robert Hilliard Deane, 42, was killed. James Wright, 38, of Wichita, driver of one car, was in critical condition, while passenger James Johnson, 31, Wichita, also injured. Harold J. Krause, 41, Crestwood, Mo., driver of the other car, was critically hurt.
TOPEKA The State Accident Records Section reports Chauncey Beach 73 of Luray died in a car truck crash six miles south of Osborne on U S 281. Eldon Kinman 37 of Hoisington died from injuries in an accident near Gorham on December 3.

Schoeppel urged the Civil Aeronautics Board to approve Central Airlines service from Kansas City to Tulsa with stops in Topeka Parsons and Independence Kansas and Bartlesville Oklahoma He also discussed flood control helium production plants and keeping open the Topeka Air Force Depot and Hutchinson Naval Air Station amid 1959 closure plans.
At 7 30 a m today city police were told by Alan Rollow manager that a burglary occurred at his store. Glass was broken from a rear window and a night latch opened. Missing were two 17 inch TVs two 21 inch sets two CDR rotors four table radios two small radios and one geiger counter weighing about 250 pounds total. Insurance partly covered the loss and most items were listed as removable by vehicle. The office of Dr R H Rollow adjoins the shop and a connecting door was found open.
Corpus Christi officers investigate the death of Easter Grace Condrin 47 wife of a Teamsers Union organizer. Her body was found in a muddy inlet near the Naval Air Station days after her arrival, with investigators saying little on possible foul play. Her husband W E Condrin cites fears of anti union reprisals as a motive.
Kansas traffic fatalities reported by the State Accident Records Section cover the last 24 hours and year totals. In 1957 to date there are 522 deaths, compared with 626 in the same period of 1956, including one earlier fatality.
The R. H. Garvey family of Wichita gave 20000 to the Kansas 4 H Club center at Rock Springs Ranch near Abilene. Trustee chairman W Dale Cruser said the gift funds a stone cottage to be built at the site.
A 39 year old Wichita housewife, Wavey Fenton, died when her home burned yesterday. Coroner Jim Bratt said she apparently fell asleep or collapsed on a living room sofa while holding a lighted cigarette. Off duty firefighter Newton Dunscomb found the blaze and fought it with a garden hose until fire trucks arrived. She leaves her husband Virgil R. Fenton and two daughters.

In Villa Rica Georgia a Thursday natural gas explosion killed twelve and injured more than twenty. Funeral services were set for four victims locally and one in Atlanta while six others were laid to rest yesterday. Cleanup followed the blast destroying four stores and a dentist office with damage insured above two hundred thousand dollars. The cause remained unknown.
Police Lt. William Burch said an ex convict signed a statement admitting the theft of 8600 dollars in furs from Mrs Dolores Tatum wife of pro basketball star Goose Tatum. The furs were stolen Nov 26 from Mrs Tatum's apartment. Basher Jr Frank 37 claimed two other men were involved.
