A couple from a distant town toured Neo sho Memorial Hospital open house visiting the obstetrics and west patient wings then asked for patient room information at the lobby with a Gray Lady guiding them. A Good Samaritan, Mrs. Joseph Adelgren, helped crash victims at a Chanute area wreck and received praise.
Richard S Nelson, 71, of Fairway Kansas, was found shot to death at his stepdaughter’s home in Independence. His estranged wife Rose Marie Nelson, 40, admitted firing the shots after signing a separation agreement about a month earlier and spending the night nearby. A .38 revolver with four expended shells was found in a bedroom dresser.
Attorneys for James Latham and George York asked the Kansas Supreme Court for a stay of execution. Both teens, 19 and 18, are scheduled to be hanged January 30 for the pistol slaying of Otto E. Ziegler near Wallace along U.S. 40 last June. The pair were convicted in Russell County in November and sentenced by Dist. Judge Benedict P. Cruise. If granted, further legal arguments will follow.
Anthropologist Dr. Theodore McCown of the University of California concluded seven pounds of bones and teeth found on Saipan do not belong to Amelia Earhart or Fred Noonan. He determined the remains are Oriental in origin after X ray and microscopic tests. The bones were unearthed by San Francisco radio announcer Fred Goerner and sent for analysis.
Heavy fighting erupted in Elisabethville as United Nations forces clashed with Katanga secessionists. UN reports one dead and two wounded among troops at the airport, with dozens of Katanga casualties in a major attack signaling renewed efforts to control the area.
Acting Secretary General U Thant gives UN authorities carte blanche to restore order in Katanga. Swedish troops flown to Elisabethville reinforce UN and Katangan forces amid deadly roadblock action. Two European mercenaries and 38 Katanga police and paracommandos reported killed.
W H Caldwell of Mid America Inc explains a new Kansas law allowing cities to issue revenue bonds to finance land purchase and building for industry. The law, passed last session, funds bonds via lease income. it requires stable industry and steady returns to meet obligations.
Mrs. R. Q. Lane aged 67 of McPherson was killed and her husband aged 68 was seriously injured when their car collided with a Santa Fe freight train at a residential crossing in McPherson Monday night.
The State Department states no document exists proposing that the United States transfer nuclear weapons to the United Nations.
In Dallas Texas an AP report notes a theft at a suburban store where fur pieces were taken during business hours. The theft occurred so quickly that a dozen saleswomen did not realize what happened until moments later.
Raymond Cecil Morrow Jr., 37, of Topeka, died Monday after remaining in a coma 56 days from injuries in a truck crash Oct. 10 on U S 59 south of Nortonville.
Kansas traffic death log shows 24 hour totals up to 9 am Tuesday December 8 1961 with 499 fatalities for the year and a comparison 467 for the 1960 period. The Topeka AP report lists daily counts and trends in road deaths.
President and Mrs. Kennedy will visit Venezuela and Colombia December 16 and 17 to promote the Alliance for Progress. The trip will include dedicating low‑cost housing education and rural development projects begun under the program as part of a broader Western Hemisphere effort.
Chanute school board discussed the future of the Chanute Junior College at a meeting previewing the state junior college agenda for a Dec. 14 Topeka session. Dell Reed and Superintendent Buford Fisher outlined accreditation options with North Central and state education standards, noting current credits transfer to state universities. The panel suggested a potential eight year horizon for a separate junior college building, possibly expanding operations or merging with a future junior-senior high facility.
Police fielded 23 traffic accidents in November down from October. One injury occurred with no hospitalizations. Bonds and fines for reckless driving and illegal parking totaled 355 and 711 in October, with monthly totals across the year reaching 7 160. Parking meter fines fell to 923 with year to date 3 827.
Donald Inman 25 of Lawrence remains in critical condition after a two car crash on highway K39 eight miles west of here Saturday that killed five including his wife. His daughter Julia 4 shows improvement with a broken leg and facial lacerations. Surviving teen Albert Malloy 17 of Iola is not seriously ill. Both Inman and Julia are at Neosho Memorial Hospital.
Kansas Highway Commission has legal clearance to dispose of about a half million Centennial license tags. Highway Director Addison H. Meschke says they may serve as small highway markers or be offered to other state agencies as surplus property. Some tags have been sold for 25 cents. funds recovered total about $37,500 with 129,431 reaching buyers. Tags may also be used for city name plates, highway post bands, or roadside delineators after shortening and reflectorizing.
A rancher ordered Secretary Udall and his party off a 1000 acre grazing area near Manhattan Kansas as they inspected the site of the proposed Prairie National Park. Udall said such pushback is a human reaction but that future generations may benefit from park lands. About 125 farmers and ranchers gathered in Westmoreland to protest the plan, delivering a petition signed by 300 people.
The Trujillo family, tied to Dominican leader Rafael Trujillo, plans to depart for Spain in April 1959 as Congress considers a proposal to create a national park. An advisory board recommended the park’s establishment, requiring formal approval.
The Chanute Elks lodge announced fifty dollar scholarships for two local youths, Sydney Naughton and Markus Steeves, winners of the lodge youth leadership contest. They will compete for state Elks awards up to 300 and national prizes up to 1000, based on leadership Americanism citizenship perseverance stability resourcefulness and honor.
The Burlington Mfg. Co. garment plant operator Joe Rayburn will be featured at the Chamber of Commerce Salute to Industry luncheon at the Tioga Hotel tomorrow noon. A plant tour follows at 1 p.m. Reservations are advised for the meal.
Dr. T. Marshall Hahn, dean of arts and sciences at Kansas State University, will become president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute upon Walter S. Newman’s June 3 retirement. The VPI board of visitors announced the change at its meeting in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Edwin M Wheeler of Topeka was named assistant to the president of the Santa Fe Railway to be effective January. Wheeler, an attorney, will have offices in Chicago and succeeds the late J P Reinhold. He has served as attorney for the Kansas Railroad Committee since last February. He is a Marion native and previously served on the Santa Fe legal staff from 1955 to 1959. He later joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Co legal staff.
Clear skies and southerly winds boosted Kansas temperatures after a below freezing night. Forecasters predict highs near 50 in most areas and lows around 25 to 30 tonight. Wednesday should stay mild with a Pacific front bringing clouds but no rain or major changes. Overnight lows ranged 21 at Topeka 22 at Manhattan and 32 in Wichita. Monday highs varied from 45 at Goodland to 62 at Pittsburg.
