Gems and Minerals Display At Chanute Exhibition
The Chanute Gem and Mineral Society held a two day show in the Memorial building Federation Room with about 300 attendees. President Robert E. Williams noted 25 members displayed gems fossils and jewelry from Independence McCune Iola Buffalo Chanute and a Wichita dealer showcased equipment. Door prizes and grab bags were offered.

Five Teens and Four Adults Die In K39 Crash West of Chanute
A two car collision on K39 eight miles west of Chanute Saturday afternoon killed five teenagers and four adults and injured three others. The teen drivers in a 1959 Pontiac were racing with the westbound 1954 Ford sedan carrying the Inman family from Lawrence to Neodesha. Deaths include Leta Lambert 12 Rose Mary Geisler 16 Mickey Hufford 15 Fredie Likely 15. Mrs Donald Inman 25 died early Sunday with her husband 30 critically injured and four year old Julie Inman injured. The accident injured Albert Malloy 17 and left Inman and Julie in critical condition. Police say tire marks and witness accounts indicate a high speed race occurred before the crash. The Pontiacs license plate is listed to Lela Sarratt Goodman Missouri. Sheriff Ron Klingenberg and highway troopers investigated with Chanute ambulances transporting victims to hospital and mortuaries.</S:

Bloody Nose Only Injury In Accident
A traffic crash at Main and Evergreen about 1:20 p.m. yesterday left Lola girl Grace Shorb with a bloody nose. Four Lola teens rode in a 1956 Ford driven by Bobbie Morris, 19, as the car rear ended a 1957 Chevrolet driven by Michael Casper, 16, of rural Chanute. Minor damage reported to both vehicles.

Man Survives Leap From Golden Gate Bridge
Fran cis Patrick Kennedy from Oakland survived a jump from the Golden Gate Bridge, the second known survivor, after leaping 150 feet onto rain-softened ground. He suffers multiple fractures and internal injuries and remains in critical condition. In 1941 Cornelia Vanderland, 22, jumped 220 feet into the water. her whereabouts are unknown.

Man Held After Slaying In Atwood Kansas
William Baker 20 is held for investigation in the slaying of Dick Hammill 26 early Sunday in Atwood. Sheriff say the shooting followed a fight with Harold Jakes 30 who accused Baker of taking his jacket at an Atwood pool hall Saturday night. A car carbine shot through a rear car window struck Hammill as he stood on the opposite side. Hammill was married with one child.

A fire destroying a farm building near Walnut claimed 12 heifer calves on the Raymond Schoenhofer farm southwest of Walnut. Charles De Weese of Thayer won the Tribune weekly $3 news tip prize for reporting the incident, which caused about $1,500 in losses.

Erie Traffic Crash Report Involving Teen Drivers
Sheriff reports a rear end collision on 3rd Street in Erie Friday night. A 1956 Ford convertible driven by 17 year old William Frederick of Earlton was struck from behind by a 1955 Plymouth driven by 18 year old Dick Fraker from Erie Route 2. Frederick sustained about 150 dollars in damage. Fraker’s car was not damaged.

German Crash Fatal to Three Near Mainz
A Lufthansa four-jet Boeing 720B on a training flight crashed near Mainz during an emergency landing near Ebersheim. All three aboard were killed, including two flight captains and a flight engineer. No passengers were aboard. The cause was not immediately known.

Overnight 2500 East German workers reinforced seven border crossings and expanded concrete sections of the Berlin wall. Cold spell hits Kansas. brief, with warming coming Tuesday
