Mrs. Gordon Gray announced a December 15 deadline for donations to help more than 1,000 patients at Winter General VA hospital in Topeka. Gifts, not wrapped, may be left with Mrs. Gray or at the Red Cross Memorial Building. Cash gifts fund purchases.
Forecasters warn heavy drifting snow and strong northerly winds in northwest Kansas and western Nebraska. Five inches or more possible in northwest and north central areas with Cheyenne, Goodland reporting several inches. Arctic cold follows with highs 15 to 20 in the northeast and low 30s southeast.

Earl J. Kerschen age 34 of Conway Springs died in a Wellington hospital after his car skidded and rolled 162 feet following a collision with a car driven by Wanda Riggs also of Conway Springs. The crash occurred at a country road intersection near Conway Springs 24 miles northwest of Wellington.
A 400 foot temporary bridge across the Rio Grande collapsed while being dismantled injuring 28 people. Doctors and supplies rushed to Eagle Pass as two patients remained critical but stable. The bridge linked Eagle Pass Texas with Piedras Negras Mexico and fell about 300 feet.
Louisville resident George D. Anderson a 27 year old truck driver was fined 50 and sentenced to 10 days in jail for a breach of peace charge after he entered H M Kessler's home uninvited to get warm following a night of drinking.
A downtown Des Moines fire forced more than 100 people from the Salvation Army center and a nearby hotel as a quarter block of brick buildings burned. Fire officials reported all evacuees escaped unharmed.

One person died and three others were injured in a two car crash near McPherson last night. Rowland Dechard 36 of Concordia was killed and Jerome Sorell also of Concordia sustained a broken leg. Mrs Albert Moore of Great Bend was in serious condition with minor injuries. Authorities say Sorell tried to pass another auto in dense fog.
Police seek a sadistic killer after Ruth Beal 50 was found beaten strangled and raped in her Harvey home. Her husband Larry 52 discovered her naked body in a rear bedroom with hands tied mouth stuffed with rags and a neck stocking. The crime marked the area’s fifth strangulation in seven weeks and remains unsolved.
Gordon Kenneth Arnett of Oklahoma City was taken into custody on North Santa Fe early today for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence. He posted a $125 bond and was released, per a police headquarters report.

A Canadian military transport plane crashed in Montmedy Forest today killing an initial ten of sixteen aboard while three were injured. The craft, flying from Metz to Marville Air Base, disappeared two miles south of Montmedy after takeoff from Gros Tentina near Metz and was destroyed.
Clair Elliff, a wounded former convict linked to two Denver gas station holdups, was arrested last night after six officers surrounded a motel where he hid with an 18 year old girl. Elliff was shot by a victim during the struggle and taken to Clockner Penrose Hospital in Denver. The girl, Darlene Winters, aged 18, was jailed.
In East Rutherford New Jersey truck driver Hubert Coaxum told a judge his summons for careless driving was eaten by his three children claiming they swallowed it without harm. Magistrate Albert D Amato dismissed the case citing the humorous excuse.
