A 1962 budget plan sets a $9,090 Red Cross fund drive quota for Neosho County. The split is $5383 for county use and $3707 for national programs. Chair A H Krone and Sam Senseney will allocate city and township funds, with a new membership chair to be named.

DETROIT AP reports speculation that the United Auto Workers will target General Motors first in a new contract dispute. The GM pact expires Friday at 12:01 am local time and the International Executive Board meets at 6 pm to name the adversary if a strike occurs.

Crash Fatal Near Cedar Point Claims Driver

Ernest N. Osman, 79, of Cedar Point, died from injuries after his car collided with a truck one mile north of Cedar Point at the intersection of U.S. 5 and a county road. Osman was the car’s driver.

Neosho Waterfowl Refuge opens for hunters later

Neosho County builds a 1 million refuge two miles southeast of Chanute to attract migratory waterfowl and support fishing. Flooding of three pools begins this fall with pool 3 stocked with 96 260 bass and 7 500 channel catfish, though many drowned in floods.

Mother Kills Young Son Then Herself

In Leavenworth Kansas 44 year old Ruth Czajkowski killed her 7 year old son Robert and then herself with a .32 revolver after a troubled period following a car accident. Police reported the son Johnny Czajkowski recounted the morning of the incident and identified his mother as the shooter.

Nebraska Fugitive Captured in Wichita

Charles Stanley Barnes, 33, identified as a Nebraska prison fugitive, was captured in Wichita Monday night. Barnes fled a Lincoln Capitol work detail three weeks ago and said he had been in Wichita for two weeks. He was serving time for stealing 10 typewriters and an adding machine from McCook Junior College on Oct. 8.

The Chanute city commission pledged cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce to identify ready industrial sites near Santa Fe Park. Chanute Faces Controversy Over Animal Shelter Abuses

Hutchinson Kansas humane society head Guy P Miller accused Chanute’s dog pound of horrific abuse including alleged burning of animals and use of paper bags as traps. Tulsa Couple Arrested South of Thayer

Tulsa couple William Wade Hampton and Imogene Hampton were arrested by state police south of Thayer. Mrs Hampton pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated transporting an open bottle parking on the highway and no license. She fined 160 dollars plus 5 costs. Hampton pleaded guilty to intoxication and fined 15 dollars plus 5 costs. She scratched wrists with a lipstick tube while in jail and was treated by a doctor.

Beauty Loses in Many Ways in Miss World Contention

Sharon Wiley 21 of Hammond Oregon arrived in New York to compete for Miss U S A part of Miss World. She lost a diamond ring several pieces of luggage $100 sleep and the Miss U S A title to Jo Ann Odum. Wiley described a grueling schedule and hoped to model in New York to raise travel funds. Jo Ann Odum praised, Wiley said she was glad she did not win the pageant.

Stark Firefighters Extinguish Grass Fire

Stark firefighters extinguished a grass fire along the Katy railroad right of way between the Russell Page farm and Kimball, south of here. The blaze, started by a passing train, was out in about 20 minutes with no crop damage reported as embers drifted up to a half mile north.

Weather Hot in Kansas With 90s Expected This Week

The Weather Bureau forecasts continued fair and warm weather in Kansas over the next two days. Temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s today and Wednesday, with tonight’s lows around 65 to 70 across the state. Monday highs ranged from 90 at Pittsburg to 98 at Salina and Manhattan.

Farm Youth Killed When Equipment Falls

A 16 year old boy Marvin Eugene Kahle was killed when a hay elevator fell on him on the Bill Henry farm northwest of Stull. The accident occurred as the elevator was moved and a cable slipped. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Marvin H Kahle of Big Springs.

Woman Drowns While Furlough at Wichita River

Mrs Edna Markey 53 on weekend furlough from Larned state hospital jumped from John Mack Bridge into the Big Arkansas River at Wichita and drowned. Her body was identified by two sisters after she visited her parents in Wichita.
