Four Racketeers Seized by FBI In Acid Case

FBI agents arrested Johnny Dio and three associates over the acid attack on labor columnist Victor Riesel. The group, led by Dio, allegedly planned the assault after Riesel prepared to testify before a federal grand jury. Additional defendants include Thomas Dioguardi Domenico Bando and Charles Tuso, all with prior criminal histories.

Modest Surplus Dims Tax Cuts For Next Year

The midyear budget review shows revenues of 69.8 billion dollars and spending of 69.1 billion, creating a 700 million expected surplus for 1957. Officials say the margin remains too narrow for tax cuts, despite better than expected business conditions and other higher estimates from some bodies.

Mable K. Harris of Fort Smith Arkansas sues Dr R M Brian in federal court over alleged negligent treatment of injuries from a highway crash near Leon Kansas on April 24 1955. Harris claims improper casting caused blistering and infection leading to permanent disability and loss of earnings as a broker and builder.

Two Women Wounded By Stray Bullet In El Dorado

A stray bullet entered an open window at a Salvation Army meeting injuring Daisy Rhodes 67 and Lt Bella Elliott 21. The bullet passed through Rhodes lip without breaking dentures and hit Elliott in the arm. Both were treated at a hospital. Police say the .22 caliber slug was likely fired from a distance and nearly spent.

The State Accident Records Section lists 24 hour fatalities for Topeka with totals of 0 in the last day, 403 year to date in 1956, and 355 for the same period in 1955.

Wind Destroys Power Lines and Frays Town

A 62 mph wind gust caused widespread damage to power and telephone lines, trees, and TV antennas. City crews repaired outages after limbs blocked streets and a northern area lost service until about 3 a.m. CAA recorded 62 mph at 9:14 p.m. Lightning and heavy showers accompanied the storm with light rain totals.

Chanute holds the initial session of its Ground Observer Corps at the Memorial Building with 28 attendees. Sgt. William Orr outlines the national program, post staffing needs, and observer duties. Air Force C47 Makes Emergency Landing Near Chanute

An Air Force C47 en route from Tinker AFB Oklahoma to Cedar Rapids Iowa made an emergency landing at Chanute City Airport at 10 22 a m. The right engine failed and the left showed trouble, but the craft landed safely and was towed to the hangers due to brisk winds and engine loss.

Second Body Is Found Of Downed Plane Crew

The Navy reports the second crewman of the patrol plane shot down off the China coast last Thursday has been recovered by a U S destroyer. The Mercator carried 16 aboard. the first body was found near Shanghai a day earlier as wreckage and the earlier remains were located. Communist China admitted the shootdown but claimed it attacked a nationalist aircraft.

Victim of Beating Found Semi Conscious Near Shop

A 63 year old man named Mike Friedman was found semi conscious on a sidewalk outside his motor car parts shop in Kansas City. He was admitted to a hospital with facial lacerations and bruises and could not recall the attack. Detectives are investigating the beating.

Seven year old Carole Vivian Scott drowned while wading in a pond at her home north of St Joseph last night, authorities said.

Boy on Bicycle Burned by Acid

James Badger a 13 year old boy riding a bicycle in Lemay was drenched with sulphuric acid leaking from a truck. A passing car splashed the chemical causing a loss of control and burns to his chest arms face and legs. About 4000 gallons escaped after a valve opened near railroad tracks.

Kansas Anti-discrimination Commission officials announced a Chanute area survey of employment practices affecting minorities. Triplets Born to Baldwin Couple in Fort Leavenworth

A Baldwin Kansas naval airman D K Joseph C Calvin and his wife welcomed triplets at the U S Army Hospital Fort Leavenworth. Fire destroyed a warehouse of Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp in the Fairfax district last night. Company officials estimate damage may reach half a million dollars and a company executive said as much as 1,000 tons of insulation could have been stored in the building.
