Roberta Proctor’s one ring circus entertained thirty neighborhood youngsters Thursday afternoon. No repeat performance planned for a while says Roberta’s mother Mrs. Robert H. Proctor at 309 S. Highland. Children enjoyed fish pond ball throwing and a dart throwing stand with 51 prizes quickly claimed.
Trans World Airlines will expand its Kansas City maintenance facility by adding a 12 million dollar jet engine overhaul base to open by late next year. City officials say 450 to 500 new jobs will be created with a three million dollar payroll. The plant would sit at the Mid-Continent International Airport currently under construction north of the old municipal field, though work on the airport has halted for funds. City financing is involved.
A union official says over 1400 Western Electric employees in Texas and Oklahoma may strike if negotiations fail by midnight tomorrow. Meetings will be held in Dallas Fort Worth Houston Lubbock San Antonio Oklahoma City and Tulsa to brief members. The Communications Workers of America Local 6290 seeks a 16 cent per hour wage increase. current pay ranges from 1.42 to 2.65 per hour. The workers install central office equipment for the Bell Telephone System.
The $2 323 632 500 atomic energy bill cleared Congress and moves to the President to fund the current fiscal year. Hoffa is back with the Teamsters after Senate probes labeled him a disgrace and detailed 48 misconduct acts.
In Topeka a vandal damaged an art store by splattering black paint on oil paintings and spilling varnish remover. The intruder left a note stating you should have a night watch man. No injuries reported. Local police investigate the incident.
Congressional leaders announce a bipartisan civil rights bill compromise expected to pass next week prior to adjournment. The measure preserves judge without jury trials for most cases but allows jury trials in criminal contempt with limits, and sets a six month imprisonment and $1000 fine as the overall maximum.
Big crowds toured the Neosho County Fair with 2 384 exhibits on display led by 4-H clothing entries. Judy Harding and Janice Richwine won a vocal duet talent prize, while the Eveready Square Dance Group claimed the other top award. Winners from Erie Chanute and Thayer will represent the county at the State Fair in Hutchinson September 14 19. A style revue at Erie High School closes the event tonight with exhibits at the American Legion hall beforehand.
A trial examiner for the National Labor Relations Board recommends Wichita Television Corp the operator of KARD TV in Wichita restore the jobs of 18 employees Two were discharged and 16 later refused reinstatement after striking June 2 1956 The examiner says the firm engaged in unfair labor practices and orders back pay and an end to anti union activity with a 20 day window for exceptions.
Gerald K. Hanson a 22 year old deaf mute from Fowlerville was ordered to report for a physical and active duty on September 6 after being classified 1-A. The classification was appealed and Col. Arthur A. Holmes said Hanson was recorded as passing minimum physical standards. Induction postponed pending investigation.
A two headed Holstein heifer with four eyes and two mouths was born yesterday on Casimir Sztuba’s farm in Grafton Massachusetts. Dr. Wallace Black of the University of Massachusetts notes one mouth eats while the other appears to feed due to a fusion at the jaw.
The Kansas weather outlook shows a slow warming trend this weekend after a cool front. Temperatures will be seasonably cool tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s across the state and little chance of rain. Reports note Topeka 0.06 inches, Goodland 50, and scattered showers in spots yesterday.
State Accident Records reports 316 traffic fatalities in Kansas for 1957 to date, with 403 fatalities in the same period for 1956, and zero new deaths in the last 24 hours.
In Dixon Illinois the bodies of Nancy 10 Ruthie 9 and Theresa 8 were recovered by more than 100 workers from an abandoned quarry after a 22 day search. The girls disappeared Wednesday afternoon and were found about 3 am beneath mud and clay 35 feet below the rim near a tree.
In Wichita at 2:25 a.m. a gunman robbed a supermarket of more than $800 delaying cash from the register and the safe. Manager Ronnie Leatherman 22 aided the suspect but could not open the safe. Leatherman was abducted and forced to drive toward Newton where he hid at a truck stop until found.
The six county embargo on anthrax shipments is reduced as Oswego reports only one isolated case. Neosho County and parts of Cherokee Labette and Montgomery counties are removed from the quarantine zone. Cattle deaths in Labette area total ~400. farms quarantined reach 200. Embargo boundaries revert to former limits along U S 160 and U S 75.
Scarborough Maine AP reports Marth Cole 24 endured a four hour struggle with tides and waves to aid her wrecked family after a 15 foot boat with an outboard motor sank off Stratton Island. Her 22 month old son Jeffery died. husband Thomas O. 25 and others survived wearing life jackets.
Wilson County appraisers set compensation for the K39 relocation from US 75 to Chanute. Involves about 116 acres with $12 922.05 for damages and $10 931.27 for land rights, plus fence moves tree losses and pond damages. Chanute rights of way not started. owners have 30 days to sue for higher payment.
In Britain housewives and officials debate the Lion stamp on eggs from the British Egg Marketing Board. The board says the mark guarantees freshness when packed. housewives say it does not ensure freshness on arrival. The board cites practical cost and dating issues, joking that dating eggs would require cooperation from hens.
The Kansas State Supreme Court rejects 81-year-old R A Maxwell's habeas corpus request. Maxwell claims unlawful confinement by his 87-year-old brother R B Maxwell who seeks guardianship and a court-ordered mental examination. Also notes a Neosho Red Cross quarterly meeting at 8 p m Monday in Memorial Building office.

Newmarket Only-Thomas Hall, 52, of Pefferlaw, described himself as a poor Romeo and a fool, and was remanded on a charge of unlawfully being in a dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offense. He testified he climbed a ladder to the bedroom of a former female employer in Pefferlaw, about 25 miles north of here. The woman said he grabbed her by the throat and she chased him from the house.
