A Kansas legend resurfaces as readers recall a reported 37 ft snake seen around Twin Mounds in Fredonia in 1869 1871. The tale, cited from an 1871 Anderson County history by F A Jones, describes a giant blue black spotted serpent captured and skinned for Wood's Museum in Chicago.
Paul Beard operates a 30 acre channel catfish farm four miles southwest of Erie. He sells foot long fish at 35 dollars per hundred for stock ponds and 55 dollars per hundred for larger fish. Breeding stock totals 30 pairs, with eggs hatched in a controlled hatchery under paddle-motion water. Feeding runs about six months yearly, with seining or pond draining used to move fish to market.

The American Oil Co refinery in Neodesha plans to shut down after 72 years, with a tentative closing date of April 1 1970. The plant employs 202 workers, has an annual payroll of 1.7 million dollars, an assessed value of 3.7 million, and a capacity of 30 800 barrels of crude oil per day. Communities including Chanute vow support to help Neodesha rebound.

The Kansas Senate Commercial and Financial Institutions Committee held a hearing on a proposed uniform consumer credit code. The measure would raise legal interest rates from 18 to 36 percent in certain credit forms, with broader changes debated and mixed support from financial groups and lawmakers.
Industrialist William P. Lear announced a $4 million effort to develop smog free steam engines and offered to build steam buses as well as cars. Lear Enterprises proposed a prototype steam bus for San Francisco Municipal Railway and Alameda Contra Costa Transit District, with a steam car for the California Highway Patrol for testing. Installed bus engine cost estimated at $1 million with $520,000 to be supplied by California.
The Kansas Committee on Criminal Administration will receive 163000 dollars under the Safe Streets and Crime Control Act. The grant, announced by Governor Docking, funds operations until Congress passes a fiscal 1970 appropriation.
