At Camp Breckinridge Morganfield 490 of 546 trainees returned after a riot that injured 13. 30 students were AWOL and 13 discharged with 6 transferred. FBI probes alleged protection racket as officials debate riot scale and cause.
The Neosho chamber derby now counts 96 entrants with new registrants Cleo V. Purdy Earlton Steve Almond Cyrl D Evans Harold Barnhart Larry Isom Terry Ann Sinclair Frank Sinclair and Mrs Harry Salzwedel. A $50 savings bond awaits the biggest catfish caught by July 1 to Nov 1 from the Neosho River. Registration and weighing stations are set around Chanute. One fish so far, a 25 pound 2 ounce flathead, has been entered.
A 1959 Ford driven by Danny J. Wiseman of Oswego was damaged about $400 in a collision on US 59 four miles south of Erie at 10 20 p m Saturday. Wiseman’s car struck a 1951 Chevrolet pickup driven by Perry Hornback of Parsons who was turning off the highway at the Country Kitchen cafe. the pickup was a total loss. Wiseman received a citation for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and his car traveled over 200 feet after impact.

Twenty four U S war planes pounded the Ban Thach hydroelectric plant near Hanoi, damaging a multi storage generator building and a dam. Other air strikes hit a bridge near Dien Bien Phu as ground fighting produced 25 Viet Cong killed by the 1st Division. Marines counted 599 enemy bodies from the Van Tuong battle. Memorial service held for 18 Marines of the 3rd Battalion.
Topeka reports cool unsettled weather with little temperature change expected through Tuesday. Highs in upper 70s, nights near 70, with a band of rain from Wichita to Olathe and showers across eastern and southern regions.
Most Rev John Patrick Cody arrived from New Orleans to become Roman Catholic archbishop of Chicago. Funeral services for Matthew H. Murphy Jr. were held in a Birmingham chapel as Klansmen and hundreds of segregationists paid a last tribute. Attendees included Collie Leroy Wilkins Jr. and two other Klansmen charged in the murder of Detroit civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo. Wilkins was recently tried and acquitted.
Irven S. Brown 56, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and former highway patrolman, was named deputy warden at the Kansas State Penitentiary. The role, for individual treatment, reflects a new position. Brown recently served in Korea as consultant to the minister of justice and to prison and police agencies.

Donovan 57 is jailed in the fatal shooting of his wife Evelyn 43 in Aurora Colorado Police say six shots were fired and the body was found bound with nylon cords Their 16 year old daughter Kathleen hid in her bedroom during the incident and later fled to a neighbor Donovan came from Leavenworth Kansas and did not resist when questioned.

John Kirchner former Kansas Turnpike Authority general manager receives a 30000 settlement plus costs after suing over his 1961 contract termination. The case moved through district and appellate courts before this agreement. Kirchner sought 41000 in salary and 15000 in punitive damages.

Cano of Humboldt at 1 20 a m Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated careless driving not having a driver's license and transporting an open bottle He was released on 160 bond with forfeiture expected The careless driving charge was dropped as a condition of the forfeiture Officers said Cano's car ran over and became stuck on a highway traffic island at 7th and Santa Fe and a wrecker had to tow it off
