Gemini 5 Opens Eight Day Flight From Cape Kennedy

Gemini 5 blasted into orbit from Cape Kennedy with L Gordon Cooper Jr. and Charles Conrad Jr. aboard to set a planned eight day mission and attempt a first rendezvous with the Little Rascal satellite. The ship reached 100 to 217 mile altitudes and planned 121 orbits, aiming to approach REP within 20 feet using radar and jet thrusters.

Johnson Pardons Caudle in Tax Case After 14 Years

President Johnson pardoned T Lamar Caudle a former head of the Justice Department Tax Division who served six months in 1960 for a tax conspiracy. The clearance wipes a $2 500 fine and allows him to practice before federal courts. Caudle said he is very happy and described living under scrutiny since Truman era.

Nominees Named for Kansas Supreme Court Seat

The Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Commission forwarded three candidates to Gov. Avery for one of two vacancies. Earl O Connor Ola the, Robert Kaul, and Ford Evans Jr are the nominees. Avery has 60 days to act. if he fails, Chief Justice Parker will appoint. The seat must replace retiring Justice Wertz. The commission paused after narrowing nearly 200 names and will fill Robb's vacancy later.

Pipeline Blast Fatal to One in Rural Ohio

A natural gas pipeline exploded as a freight train passed, killing 9 year old Nancy Anna May Rigdon and injuring at least eight others. Fire fueled by gas burned for two hours nine miles south of Van Wert, destroying about 100 acres of trees and crops as deputies reported a distant fireball seen along U.S. 30.

Pop cases slide from Coffeyville bottling truck

Thirty nine cases of pop slid off a Pepsi Cola Bottling Co truck as it rounded the US 169 corner at 7th and Lincoln about 9 am today. Eleven cases broke. It took over an hour to clear the litter and the street was washed down by a fire department truck. No traffic was interrupted.

Man Charged with Murder in Alabama Civil Rights Slaying

Tom Coleman, 55, a part time deputy sheriff and father of a highway patrolman, turned himself in and was charged with first degree murder in the slaying of Jonathan Daniels, 27, a white theology student. Father Richard Morrisroe, 26, was critically wounded. The incident occurred after Coleman visited a gravel lane near a weathered grocery store in Lowndes County. The FBI and Justice Department opened probes and a grand jury was expected to consider the case in September.

Brisbin Named First Division Engineer for Highway

Lyle C. Brisbin, division main maintenance engineer for the Kansas Highway Commission, is named First Division Engineer at Topeka effective Sept 1, replacing J C Adams who was promoted. Brisbin, a 1932 Kansas State University engineering graduate, has served in Council Grove Pittsburg Chanute and, after Army service, returns to Topeka. The Brisbins reside at 1105 S Tennessee.
