Samuel Jerry Green, 24, an escapee from a North Carolina prison work gang, was jailed in Manhattan after a tip led state highway patrolmen to a house where he was hiding. He said he fled Whittier North Carolina on August 9 and traveled via mountains to Knoxville then a bus to Manhattan. Police had been watching for him.
