Bond Election Set for Midway September 14

A bond election to fund a new Midway school will be held September 14 by the Midway consolidated district. Voters will decide on up to 357000 in general obligation bonds to buy a site and build and equip the school at Golden Ridge, near US 75 and K39. Balloting runs 8 am to 6 pm.

Navy P4M Mercator Missing After North China Sea Attack

U S Navy aircraft missing after a night search 32 miles off Red China’s coast in the East China Sea. Lt Cmdr Milton Hutchinson from Cumberland RI leads the crew of the four engine P4M Mercator reportedly attacked by a Communist Chinese aircraft near Shangin and Formosa area. Crew members include Lloyd Laywayne Young of Denver and Wichita. Navy and US ships scour the area as a Peiping broadcast claims an intruding Nationalist air unit damaged a Chiang Kai-shek plane in the same vicinity.

The United States asks Britain to seek Red China information on the fate of a Navy patrol plane missing off the China Coast after an attack by unknown aircraft. The Martin P4M Mercator with four officers and 12 enlisted men was attacked at 1:25 a.m. Thursday local time north of Formosa in international waters.

Topeka reports a return of hot weather with central Kansas seeing 100 plus. Russell and Salina hit 102, Wamega 100, Manhattan 99, with readings mainly in the 90s elsewhere. No rain yesterday or forecast for the next two days. a slight cooldown is expected with mid-90s by tomorrow and lows from 50 to 66 across the state.

Tractor Accident Fatal for Independence Boy

In Independence Kansas 14 year old Richard Brent Oliver died when his farm tractor overturned as he swerved from a county road onto U S Highway 160. He was found pinned under a wheel and was driving home from a field with his parents Florin and Mrs Oliver reporting the incident.

Nixon Returns To Convention Amid Father’s Illness

Vice President Nixon plans to fly back to San Francisco to accept renomination as doctors and his father Frank Nixon 77 improve after a ruptured abdominal artery left him near death.
