A bond election to fund a new Midway school will be held September 14 by the Midway consolidated district. Voters will decide on up to 357000 in general obligation bonds to buy a site and build and equip the school at Golden Ridge, near US 75 and K39. Balloting runs 8 am to 6 pm.

In Dallas a house mover parked his heavy rig with a house on the shoulder. A second mobile crane carrying a house struck the first rig from the side causing about 1000 dollars in damage.
U S Navy aircraft missing after a night search 32 miles off Red China’s coast in the East China Sea. Lt Cmdr Milton Hutchinson from Cumberland RI leads the crew of the four engine P4M Mercator reportedly attacked by a Communist Chinese aircraft near Shangin and Formosa area. Crew members include Lloyd Laywayne Young of Denver and Wichita. Navy and US ships scour the area as a Peiping broadcast claims an intruding Nationalist air unit damaged a Chiang Kai-shek plane in the same vicinity.
The United States asks Britain to seek Red China information on the fate of a Navy patrol plane missing off the China Coast after an attack by unknown aircraft. The Martin P4M Mercator with four officers and 12 enlisted men was attacked at 1:25 a.m. Thursday local time north of Formosa in international waters.
Topeka reports a return of hot weather with central Kansas seeing 100 plus. Russell and Salina hit 102, Wamega 100, Manhattan 99, with readings mainly in the 90s elsewhere. No rain yesterday or forecast for the next two days. a slight cooldown is expected with mid-90s by tomorrow and lows from 50 to 66 across the state.
In Independence Kansas 14 year old Richard Brent Oliver died when his farm tractor overturned as he swerved from a county road onto U S Highway 160. He was found pinned under a wheel and was driving home from a field with his parents Florin and Mrs Oliver reporting the incident.
Topeka Kansas Gov Fred Hall announces the state driver education program earned an award of excellence from the Association of Casualty and Surety Companies for its school based efforts.
Denver resident Gilbert ederhof, 22, reported a buzzing sound in his ear after a porch light change. Doctors at Colorado General Hospital removed a wayward lawn moth attracted to the light.
An open convention scene unfolds as Nebraskan delegate Terry Carpenter rejects Nixon while Joe Smith initially balks at voting. After pressure from fellow Nebraskans, Carpenter abstains before the roll and Smith ultimately votes Nixon, producing a unanimous result.
A derailed Missouri Pacific freight train in Towner Colorado damaged track and four to five cars overturned injuring none. One car crashed into the depot and destroyed the accident scene. S. Sgt. Mary Boman was visiting her parents and stationed in Washington D C.
Vice President Nixon plans to fly back to San Francisco to accept renomination as doctors and his father Frank Nixon 77 improve after a ruptured abdominal artery left him near death. The elder Nixon urged the trip, saying Nixon’s renomination would be a tonic and the vice president is expected to arrive at noon with Pat Donald and Clara Jane Nixon.
About 125 to 130 houses gained city mail delivery as southwest and western town expansion broadened routes. Postmaster Leif R. Nelson said delivery will reach homes with paved walks or drives and street boxes where needed, with no increase in postal staff.

SAN FRANCISCO Republicans roared unanimous approval last night of an Eisenhower Nixon team seen as likely to defeat a Stevenson Adlai E. Stevenson ticket. Stassen urged Nixon’s renomination while Eisenhower quashed attempts to drop Nixon. Nixon prepared to accept the nomination as his father’s condition improved.
Warren Shaw campaigning in San Francisco meets President Eisenhower and says personal contact matters. Kansas delegates, including Harry Darby, report strong support for the Eisenhower Nixon ticket amid convention excitement and staged demonstrations. Crutcher and Newlin also visit the White House entourage.
Petersburg Virginia police announce mandatory target practice after two detectives failed to capture two gunmen who had broken into a drive in restaurant. Detectives encountered the gunmen, shots were exchanged, 21 bullet holes found but no injuries or arrests.
A county advisory committee examines future care needs for elderly welfare clients in Neosho County. The study centers on centralizing care at the county farm near Erie and the shift from the old term County Farm to Nursing Home as aging residents require more support.
A massive blaze destroyed an eight story abandoned warehouse in the Union Stockyards injuring six people. Firefighters fought for five hours with over 75 pieces of equipment and six alarms sent to the scene. Damage is estimated at 150000 dollars. the Armour & Co. meat packing firm owned the warehouse slated for razing.
TOPEKA Jayhawk Electric Co submitted a low bid of 10424 dollars for an addition to the electrical distribution system at the Kansas Children's Home in Atchison. Freeto Construction Co Inc Pittsburg submitted a low bid of 7840 dollars for asphalt paving sidewalks and a retaining wall in a men’s dormitory at Pittsburg State College.
