Rio DC8 crash leaves at least 13 dead in water near Bay

The Panair do Brasil DC8 skidded off the runway at Galeno Airport near Rio de Janeiro, plunged into 15 feet of water, and sank after striking a reinforced wall. At least 13 people died and 21 were hospitalized while officials said 11 passengers remained missing.

Airman Trapped in 50 Foot Pit Rescued After 32 Days

Airman Gerald Becker 18 from Mapleton Minnesota spent 32 days in an abandoned mine pit near Hill City South Dakota. He fell 50 feet while exploring after a lake swim and survived by making a brush bed until Pete Ptacek family and two forestry men rescued him with a rope. He credited bargains with God and hope of rescue for endurance.

Chanute chamber of commerce area planning committee discussed possible projects for the new city planning commission at a breakfast meeting. Two-Car Collision Shakes Up Local Family

Mrs. Clara Colvin 43 of 1820 S Santa Fe and three passengers were shaken but uninjured after a rear end collision at 18th and Santa Fe about 5:20 pm yesterday. Milton Umbarger 20 of rural Earlton drove a 1956 Pontiac and struck the Colvin 1951 Chevrolet. damage estimated at 125 and 250 dollars respectively.

Weather report notes Chanute reaching 103 degrees tying the Aug 20 all time high, with 101 102 and 103 degree readings over the past days. Warrant Issued For Arrest Of Kansas City Driver

A felony warrant was issued for Roger Howard Rains of Kansas City after he fled police in a Mercedes Benz following a speeding stop. Officials said the felonies are extraditable under state law, though extradition may not apply. Rains held a Missouri license with a Missouri address. the car is registered in Johnson County, Kansas.

Police received two flaming youth reports with a group of eight boys aged 9 to 15 at 3rd and Lincoln after tossing burning cigarette butts into a passing woman driver’s car. A doctor later reported a paper bag burning on his porch with no one seen.

Hearing Set On Rezoning For Main Street Block

Public hearing scheduled Friday night in the Memorial building commissioners room at 8 o clock on a rezoning request for the south side of Main Street between Allen and Wilson. The committee will determine its recommendation to the city commission which holds final authority on zoning amendments. The area may be bought for a new supermarket and the change would extend south about a half block.

McHenry Sentenced On Five Charges

Cornelius Clark McHenry, Earl ton, pleaded guilty in city court yesterday to five highway patrol charges. He was sentenced to 300 days in the county jail on each, to run concurrently. Troopers took McHenry into custody Saturday near Stark for driving while intoxicated reckless driving speeding illegal tag use and no driver's license.

Fire Damages Garage as Farm Family Escapes

A Petrolia farm family barely escaped as flames engulfed their garage while they watched a TV inside. Claude Camp and son Bill alerted neighbors after spotting the fire, helping move the family car and saving belongings as the fire department arrived and saved the house. The blaze cut power to the home and likely began from trash burning nearby.

Ambulance to Aid Berlin Victims at Checkpoint Charlie

Western leaders including the United States Britain and France announced plans to station an ambulance at Checkpoint Charlie to aid future victims of shooting at the wall in West Berlin. Three Mile Stretch Of County Road Reopens Southwest Of Chanute

A three mile section of county road southwest of Chanute reopened after final sealing and oil work. The project extends from 21st and Plummer to the Neosho Wilson County line with grading and box bridge work on Plummer south from 21st. Total costs reached about 87 521.46 with funds split between county and federal sources.

Money Trays Loot Tied to Earlton Burglary

Police turned in three money changing trays and two small money boxes found near Earlton. Investigators link the items to a weekend break in at the Singer IGA store in Lola where a safe was looted for a several hundred dollars in coins and small bills. Ed Wolfe of Earlton found the items and police plan fingerprint checks with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Traffic Fatalities Reach 369 in Kansas 1962 Period

Kansas police report 369 traffic fatalities in the 24 hours ending 9 am Tuesday in the 1962 period, up from 328 in the comparable 1961 span. One earlier fatality is included in the tally.

Kansas Pipeline Runs Show July Increase

Wichita AP report from the State Conservation Division states Kansas crude oil pipeline runs averaged 305 301 barrels per day in July, topping the July allowance by 2 80 barrels set by the Corporation Commission. The Commission has an September hearing in Wichita. August allowance remained the same as July.
